My question about this case is, why did this offense lead to immediate termination rather than simply be the start of some form of progressive discipline? In my experience, employees who are summarily terminated for incidents like this have had other prior problems with their managers.

Patients should be called by their chosen name and pronouns as much as possible; however, since their legal name and gender must remain on the medical record, errors will occur.

In healthcare, all patients should be able to expect that they will be treated with respect and so employees must not use obscene gestures or coarse language.
