This scary microorganism that you can see in a (rat) blood sample is called Trypanosoma gambiense, and is a flagellated protozoan found in Africa. This is why the disease it produces is commonly called “African Sleeping Sickness.”

This is what ice from a lake looks like when you zoom into it with a stereoscopic microscope. Can you see the air bubbles trapped inside the ice? Scientists analyze air bubbles in ice core samples to figure out what the atmosphere looked like on our planet hundreds of thousands of years ago.
