I examine the complex interplay of race, veteran identity and patriotism in America. My book, “Black Veteranality: Examining Black Military Service and the Moral Dilemma of America Patriotism”, will be published by Routledge in late 2025.

As America prepares for its 250th anniversary in 2026, my series explores the contradictions inherent in American patriotism, particularly as it relates to Black veterans who have served the country yet continue to face marginalization.

Unconscionable that a President of the United States would seek to let people suffer just to leverage political gain.

Unity Without Equity Isn’t Cohesion: A Black Veteranality reading of Pete Hegseth’s new “Warrior Ethos”
By: Bryon L. Garner, PhD Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is rolling out a hard-edge “warrior ethos” agenda—tight grooming rules (no beards except narrow waivers), daily PT, and an explicit attack on DEI—framed as a return to discipline and unity. This piece utilizes Black veteranality to examine what it truly entails within the ranks: who it harms, what truths it silences, and why “unity without equity” is not cohesion but a façade.
