In most cases they won’t be adding to their overall savings but shifting money from existing taxable savings to ISAs. Many of today’s pensioners were caught out by the years of low interest rates which kept interest below the tax exempt limit and didn’t bother setting up ISAs.

Investment is a long-term commitment which pays off over time but can see big short-term fluctuations. That’s why it would be unfair to apply the cash ISA limit to pensioners who need certainty and have no opportunity to earn more if the value of their savings falls.

I should know because I’m one of the readers who completed the survey. I only did so in an effort to counter the obvious likelihood that people critical of the leadership would be more likely to take the time. It’s like a public meeting about a proposal in your local area - opponents turn up.

Before people get too excited they should read the small print:
“Survation surveyed 1,013 readers of LabourList”.
Whatever balancing was done afterwards, Labour List readers are atypical of party members and those motivated to respond even more so.
