Tinglepost 394: Pounded By This Weregroundhog In A Seemingly Endless Time Loop On Groundhog Day

power-handmaiden:

Well, this is a holiday tingler I didn’t expect! When a festive tingler drops, I have to read it right away. (And, hey, it’s also a movie reference that I actually get!)

Much like “How The Grunch Stole Chris’s Ass” this tingler riffs off of the reader’s expectations from their familiarity with the work it references. However, this story takes it further by also playing off of the reader’s expectations of the Tingleverse itself.

Before one reads this story, it’s easy to imagine a stock tingler parody of Groundhog Day, a similar story about overcoming a time loop with the power of love, but with the addition of bigfoot cock. That would be so simple to do, but Dr. Tingle did not take the easy route here. Instead, this tingler comments on the limitations of that essential Tingleverse idea of proving love. Even such a pure and beautiful ideal cannot be everything in every situation. Just as important as it is to believe in the power of love, it is also important not to lose sight of the practical reality we all connect through, or we risk those ideals becoming powerless platitudes.

This tingler isn’t an outright rebuke of short-sighted positivity as is present in Lucky Day. Tinglers are generally gentler than that. Still, for how often I have seen adjacent ideas to this appear in tinglers, I feel like this is something that is often on Dr. Tingle’s mind. Proving love is great, but what is the practical view? Maybe not as clean as “love solves everything” but no less full of love. Love may not solve everything, and even in a tingler perhaps there are problems that are not solved by pounding, but that is no reason not to love and pound anyway.

Tinglepost 393: I Wouldn’t Have Been So Afraid Of Death If I Had Known The Pearly Gates Were This Hot And Also Bi
power-handmaiden: > I had to read this tingler as soon as I saw the title. It was just too intriguing to me personally. I was raised Catholic and I have read and heard so many imaginings of Heaven, and of meeting the saints there, etc etc. I never gave much thought to the intentions of their writers. They were obvious. The stories are meant to encourage believers to live a virtuous life and/or comfort believers when they grieve loved ones. What about such a story from a secular perspective, though? I’m aware that Dr. Tingle is not a religious person, so what sort of message does he convey in a story like this? > > What I found in this story was an inversion of a different sort of Christian story about the afterlife that I’ve encountered a lot. Stories about Hell. These stories usually have a specific message: if only you knew what awaited you, you would definitely place less importance on day-to-day distractions and pleasures, and focus on the “big picture” for believers: what awaits you after you die. To me, this tingler feels like a direct argument against those sorts of stories. The world we get to experience every day is beautiful, and even if we did know about an afterlife for certain, it wouldn’t make this life a lesser one. It wouldn’t change the fact that we also have all the possibilities of this life to enjoy first.

the hotel where you once dreamed
last night as the rain poured in los angeles i trotted over to get some take out for me and sweet barbara. when i arrived at restaurant i looked across the street and realized ‘oh dang that is the hotel that big timers would always put me up in as a young buckaroo when theyd fly me to this city’ and there was this incredible moment where i remembered the exact hotel balcony i once stood on, and the BIG DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE i had back then, and i chuckled because it was such a different dream. yet here i am on this timeline i couldve never expected and it is BETTER than anything i imagined as creative buckaroos we sometimes are beholden to a specific path we dream up, but in my experience art becomes SO POWERFUL when we hand over the reins and let it teach us about ourselves. when we COLLABORATE with fate. when we realize there is no artistic failure, there are just WAVES buds used to ask 'do you worry your chuck tingle writing will take away from your REAL career and art?’ and i would say 'CHUCK is my real art. when i let the wave carry me this is where it goes. i have never felt this fulfilled’ (funny enough this was at a time when more folks called this a 'bit’) as i stood there last night i felt a tether between past and present, and i was so overwhelmed with gratitude. to the creators out there feeling like you have failed in art because you are riding a scary wave, please understand the current is not always your enemy, it can be your power. WORK WITH IT i talk a lot on the power of our uniqueness, but often in a cosmic sense. we are also unique in our daily story, IN OUR WAVES, and a wave is not a wave without ups and downs. the CURRENT can carry you beautiful places, like waiting for your takeout order across from the hotel where you once dreamed

Tinglepost 392: How The Grunch Stole Chris’s Ass
power-handmaiden: > First off, THAT TITLE. God, what a great tingler title. I know this is probably so obvious of a point that I don’t even need to say it but I’m going to say it anyway. The title of this tingler is INSPIRED. I only actually read the tingler today but ever since I saw it posted, I’ve been saying the title whenever possible. (Someone at the dumpling-making party my family does every year actually asked me about “All I Want For Christmas Is To Eat Out My Christmas Tree” because I’m the go-to person for this type of conversation now. Even though I also love that tingler I was SO ready to drop this tingler’s title in conversation too because damn, seriously, it’s just so fun to say!!!) > > Actually reading the tingler did not disappoint, either. Rather than a straightforward parody like Pound Hard, this is an inversion of the Grinch story made to convey a different moral entirely. This story has a very clever use of an iconic character that reinforces its message on a meta level. The central story focuses on the town’s pre-conceived idea of the Grunch, and it relies on the cultural idea of the Grinch for the reader to understand and relate personally to their perception. This means the story manages to do a lot, in an emotionally believable way, within the short wordcount of a tingler. > > Tinglers like this make me think about fanfiction as a unique type of writing with the potential to play with ideas in a distinct way from original fiction. There is an entire metatextual element that gets introduced when using known characters, and I love how Dr. Tingle plays with varying approaches, from strictly sticking to a canon interpretation, to flipping the story on its head entirely. Getting to compare them all felt like a Christmas present for me! I think the approach of this story is particularly brilliant, with a parallel existing between the story readers will be familiar with and the hearsay passed around in the tingler.
