Volunteering at our church’s booth for pride and the person in charge of friendship bracelets is sick. No need to fear, I’ve been preparing for this moment for years! #swiftie
Beads with a friendship bracelet that reads “you need to calm down” which is a Taylor swift song

Now I’m looking up funfetti sourdough making with the rest of the internet when I have courses to prep. Thanks Taylor 🙄😂 #swiftie #itsaloafstory
Google search trends for funfetti sourdough peaked when Taylor Swift mentioned it

I love teaching with open textbooks because then I can cut this kind of nonsense and add what's important to learning child development.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

A sign of gender and genre bias from mentioning a blonde woman who sings pop music? Perhaps.

These weren't courses about Taylor Swift. These were psych, business, and humanities courses that were exactly the same descriptions/learning objectives except "incorporating Taylor Swift's career and music" was added.

But the popular culture themed course was not considered less difficult. The Taylor Swift course was though--perceived difficulty was notably lower than pop culture or control courses.

There's a concern that incorporating popular culture will lead to students thinking the course is less difficult/rigorous. Because pop culture is stereotyped as vapid and lacking value.

Students who knew more about Taylor Swift were more likely to be interested in the Taylor Swift themed course. Similar findings for popular culture. This makes sense--their initial interest in the theme of the course likely sparked interest in the course in general.

Students who knew more about Taylor Swift were more likely to enroll in the Taylor Swift course. Which makes sense. This wasn't the case with the popular culture course. Which doesn't really make sense and I'm still scratching my head a bit about.

interest in the course, and how difficult they thought the course was.

College students were randomly assigned to reading college course descriptions and learning objectives that either incorporated Taylor Swift, pop culture in general, or neither (control). They were then asked about their likelihood of enrolling in the course….

Did you enjoy the moment though?

No MNDNR, I will not “enjoy the moment” if I see a bear. I will panic 🐻 😱
