We propose that balances do not always operate in a contact of exactitude and discuss how balances relate to larger principles of what it means to be "in balance" with your community.

This article builds on the shorter piece we published for Sapiens www.sapiens.org/culture/wipi... a couple of years ago. Broadly we unite modern and historic descriptions of hanging balances with archaeological data to understand the diverse contexts that balances are used in.
