You just gotta discover a book with a terrible cover, read it anyway, and let it change your life forever.

Finished The Emotional Craft of Fiction. Great craft book that discusses on an essential, yet not very well-circulated aspect of the craft. I found the insight amazing, the exercises very practical; even if some 'lessons' might be too similar with each other. A two-thumb up rec!
Currently reading: With a Vengeance (Riley Sager), The Emotional Craft of Fiction (Donald Mass), and The Thin Man audiobook (Dashiell Hammett) on libby

Have a youtuber ever written a good fictional book? And I mean people who starts out as content creator on youtube (for whatever reason), then write books, and not John Green, who is originally a writer before he's a youtuber.

Read the feedback. It wasn't that bad. Plot beats are now improved 🤘
I got feedback for the plot beats of my YA WIP and I'm so scared to look at it 😭 probably because the person who looked at it is someone I respect and look up to a lot and my perfectionism is kicking in hard 😭

Anti-tropes: what are some tropes that you've purposefully avoided in your WIP? OR, are there any tropes that you've put a twist on?

I'm blowing through Pride & Prejudice. I wanna eat it's dialogues with a big spoon

The Shadow Divide "breaks" some genre convention for spy thriller. Which means it might be unsalable; yet I believe in it. People will love it, maybe just a small amount of them. I'm willing to take a risk, no matter the publishing route

I'm in a period in my life where I wonder if I'll get to live my dream, or my 20s will repeat itself and I'll be stuck in jobs I hate forever

Don't abbreviated "Specific Aims" as "SA" 😭
Science PSA: Never abbreviate “analysis” as “anal”. Ever.

Marrick would love heavy metal music. Metallica's Master of Puppets 🤘

Share a song you think your Main Character would like. This doesn't necessarily need to relate to their story, this is just something you think they would enjoy listening to!

Jane Austen's omniscient voice is so charming, witty, and perfectly sarcastic that it reads like I'm hearing the tale from my dearest and wittiest friend. This style, imo, is even more intimate that being in 1st person POV.

I'm not writing. I'm thinking about it: 1/ ideas for my first chapter re-write; 2/ ideas for future substack posts; 3/ another mentorship proposal

ChatGPT’s signature writing style is everywhere now, and I hate it. It reminds me of when we tried mixing all the beverages at the soda fountain in middle school. We didn’t actually create the perfect drink, we just made a cloying monstrosity that lost everything good about its constituent parts.

Beta-reading is a skill not often taught & my other thoughts on giving feedback
A substack post that is much longer than I thought it would be, and I love to hear your thought on this interesting part of the writing process <3
