"Emergency Medicaid uses federal money to help match states’ payments to hospitals. That emergency money makes up less than 1% of Medicaid spending, which goes to people including immigrants with legal status as well as unauthorized immigrants." Caitlin Babcock.

"Who qualifies for this depends on each state’s standards for Medicaid eligibility & for what qualifies as an emergency."

“There’s a specific formula that is used, and the amount that the federal government pays varies across states, but both [federal and state] governments chip in to cover the cost of that emergency care,” says Laura Wherry, an associate professor of economics at New York University.

Hospitals can be reimbursed for these expenses through a program called Emergency Medicaid. The money – which includes federal dollars – covers emergency treatment for unauthorized immigrants who would have been eligible for Medicaid if not for their immigration status.

There are a few instances in which the gov does pay for unauthorized immigrants to receive medical treatment. Hospitals are legally required to provide people with emergency treatment, regardless of their ability to pay or their immigration status.

GOP hits Democrats over health care, unauthorized immigrants. What’s behind the claim?

The US gov is partially closed but the aggressive ICE raids in public places continue and National Guard members deployed. Texas and Florida are the states weakening their economies and societies the most by willingly cooperating with ICE, as I told CNÑ. Graphs here from @austinkocher.com dashboard.

“These centers are not prisons for criminals but for people in deportation proceedings or readmission to the community, but the conditions are sometimes worse than in prisons for violent criminals.”

“Detentions of people have gone up, but that’s nothing to celebrate when detention conditions are often bad,” he said.

“Few people are using CBPOne for repatriations. The $1,000 incentive is not enough. Some groups are helping newcomers use the app as part of their administrative help, but this program is not attractive to someone who has been living in America for years and has a family here.”

“A lot of people could already have thought of going back to their countries anyway, others with papers may have gone out temporarily, but they could come back in the future,” Castaneda said.

The administration says 1.6 million people self-deported, but so-called self-deportations are impossible to measure.”

“Direct deportations should be easy to measure, and in the past, that figure has been made public intentionally or through requests for access to information (FOIA requests see Kocher).

It’s unreal, cruel, and inhumane to talk about quotas, fees, and goals when it comes to separating mixed-status families and deporting people who are established and integrated into /US society.”
drernestocast.bsky.social
It should be impossible to make predictions about deportations, as they should depend on the number of undocumented arrivals at the border and criminals who have served their sentences and whose countries of origin are willing to receive them.

“Announcements like these, talking about deportation trends and goals, are part of a real problem because they talk about human beings like they’re just things or figures.

Admin says 2 million immigrants have been deported or left the US: 400,000 deportations, and that "1.6 million people have decided to leave." But these numbers do not make sense. 🧵

State and federal funds may go to reimburse some of the costs incurred in critical cases at emergency rooms by the uninsured who cannot afford to pay, people experiencing homelessness, tourists without sufficient funds, and undocumented immigrants. This sometimes applies to Americans abroad as well.

Most people coming to the US from abroad are active in the labor force. The great majority pay taxes, social security & Medicare contributions through payroll deductions. Undocumented immigrants make contributions, but they cannot use those contributions. Therefore,

Latino Americanas.
