This reminds me of that time Claus von Stauffenberg was rumbled when he left a hand written note lying around.

This is just lovely. As a kid I read a few good books, and several bad ones (really - they were objectively bad), but even so, it helps with vocabulary, style, structure, grammar and much else besides.

I often feel that once corporations get to a certain size, reform through market-based consumerism isn't enough - regulation is required. What do economists call this?

While we're talking about consumer leverage, what about pensions? The payments keeping retirees in the lifestyle they have been accustomed to depends on investments in companies that perhaps they don't like. Tough choice even if you never ever buy a product from these companies.

The French physicist Fresnel often has his name mispronounced and was born in Broglie in France, but his birthplace is pronounced differently to another French physicist de Broglie who often has his name mispronounced as well.

It's time for a new initiative for our changing expectations and demography - fixing social mobility, pensions and care. Where's the leadership?

And yet the world runs on the machine code/assembler equivalent of goto. It's almost time for goto to be rehabilitated.

Huh. // Only become single line comments in c99 - at the time of this puzzle there would have been a lot more work using older compilers. Context is everything. CTRL-/ is almost muscle memory now (in C/C++ and SQL).
December 3, 2025 at 8:39 AM
"https:" is an unused goto label; // is the start of line comment indicator. So this would also compile:

My view is that in broad strokes, 'simple' measures to curb immigration result in the UK being a less pleasant place to live to put people off, when the 'complex' answer is to fix issues like housing policy, health policy, labour policy and the asylum system, then the market can do the rest.
