Either the discovery of a brand-new talent, the portrayal of a character in a different way, or just the joy of something going wrong which is the wonder of live theatre

Worth putting into perspective that over the 40 or so years I’ve documented, these are the only ones that I can think of.
What also sticks in mind is that in most cases the “disappointment” turned to joy.

Show stops at The Wizard Of Oz and Mrs Doubtfire in the same week in 2023 made me think I was a jinx. But all of this makes for the wonder of live theatre. Yes I have booked a show for the “name” but ultimately I’ve booked to see the show.

Joseph returned to London in 2022 and original Narrator, Linzi Hateley was announced for selected dates. We booked, and arrived, and learnt that she was unwell and her understudy would be going on. Disappointed? Yes, but her cover Rochelle Sharona was PHENOMENAL!

Several times - Cats and Phantom - regardless of the casts I have never felt that I’ve seen a great show afterwards, but that’s individual taste for you. Un-Popular opinion , I didn’t really “love” Wicked either.

In 2009 at a performance of Priscilla, there was a show stop when the bus became stuck pointing out towards the audience, Oliver Thornton “stranded” on the top! Jason Donovan and Tony Sheldon’s ad-libbed conversation was an absolute highlight!

C1995 I booked to see the original West End production of ALW’s Sunset Boulevard starring Elaine Paige. I didn’t read the small print and realised when I got to the theatre that Petula Clark was giving her final performance. She was AMAZING

C1992 I saw the musical Which Witch starring Jahn Teigen (of null points at Eurovision fame) as well as a host of West End royalty. It’s known as the 2nd worst musical for good reason. Unlike half the audience, who left in the interval, I watched it in disbelief to the bitter end!
