Happy establishment day for John Day Fossil Beds National Monument! On this day in 1975, JODA was taken over by the National Park Service. Its mission, to preserve the region's geological and paleontological resources and to provide for the scientific and public understanding of these resources.

So... today I added a new job duty... bat guano sample collector... I've always wanted to work with bats, but I didn't think I would be collecting their poo...

A #FathersDay weekend #FossilFriday: Patriofelis ferox, the "ferocious father of cats". (Despite the name, not a cat but an oxyaenid: no more closely related to cats than to walruses or dogs or bears). Mount from the @amnh.org

I found out last week that I won a regional director's award for natural resource management in a small park! With everything going on, it was welcome news. I'll be competing for a Director's award next. Thanks to my former superintendent for nominating me before he retired.

It was great to have @virtpaleo.bsky.social visiting the park all this week working on a nearly compleate candidate skeleton! Anne was an intern at the park in 2018 and 2019, and it's great to have her back now that's she's a PostDoc at the University of Michigan! #FossilFriday

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (JODA) preserves a fantastic record of Oregon's #Eocene and #Oligocene environments. A new study examines several JODA trackways to further understand fauna and their behaviors in these changing ecosystems.

Please keep in mind that your federal paleo peers are going through a lot right now & may have things going on internally at their various agencies keeping them busy/distracted, leading to additional time to communicate/complete various tasks. Give people a little grace during these stressful times.
