📢 PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT📢

🌳 Can planting mixed-species forests boost resilience to drought?

🔬 Our scientists are testing which species combinations thrive best under stress.

🌳🌲Today, we released an online survey seeking to collect the views and experiences of people managing mixed-species stands in the UK, as part of my new CFP project, EXPLORATION. Follow the link to find out more, and please share the survey link with your network.

📢 PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT 📢

🌳 Are we planting the right trees for tomorrow’s climate?

🔬 Using genomics & tree rings, our scientists aim to predict which genotypes will thrive, and where, to build resilient forests in the UK.

We will deploy this at a newly planted area with mixed species trees. We also aim to deploy a similar set-up at our young spruce flux site to compare with classic eddy covariance.

The project seeks to raise awareness and understanding of forest environmental data and how they relate to climate change. The data are transmitted to the cloud and they will be soon interpreted into music.

The installation is part of a small network of prototype devices used for our project, Sensing the Forest, a collaboration between Queen Mary University London, De Montfort University Leicester and Forest Research, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Today we installed an IoT device at NRS which monitors tree stem's shrinkage and expansion in response to its environment.

Excited to lead EXPLORATION, a new 3-year project funded by the Centre for Forest Protection & DEFRA, with UoE and INRAE. We’ll study how mixed species planting can boost drought resilience in forests. More here: gov.uk & forestprotection.uk

Great job, great colleagues, great range of science with which to engage! Thoroughly recommended!

Weirdly enough I still do - mainly because all my analysis scripts still have the name clear-fell 😁

It is. In this final year of SIS we should know if we are investing more on this site or moving somewhere else.

Fieldwork today. The Spruce trees are growing well, but there were some damaged needles, most likely caused by recent frost.
