I met Cayla Calhoun in March when she spoke at a showing of Will and Harper at my retirement community. She was generous and open about sharing her journey as a trans woman. She was brutally attacked in DC on June 29.

Our community in Silver Spring, MD, Leisure World, has a Purple Martin club. The club set up new nesting gourds for the birds. Some have cameras in them and now we are having fun watching the hatchlings growing in them. At hatching they are bald. In a week or two they start developing feathers.

Here’s what made me smile today: This morning as I came up the escalator from the subway I heard three women calling out, “Thank you for your service to the country, federal workers!” They held up a sign and waved as people came up to work in the federal buildings in this neighborhood.

Driving through southern Illinois today I saw many unkind bumper stickers for sale at a truck stop. Then I was pleased to see this in a Meijer’s store in Indianapolis. My new motto is MAKA. “Make America Kind Again.”
