There are some Israelis who get it, written by a personal acquaintance on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah 2025 (translation from Hebrew by FB, hence why some of the wordings are a bit off)

A favourite quote for you, Tom, from Roy Foster’s W. B. Yeats. A Life I: The Apprentice Mage. One that I’m very fond of sharing with extremely talented artists in the hope of encouraging them to never lose their self-belief or give up on the persistence in their own ability …

trying too hard to do that, maybe with his timing being off as a consequence. And in sports as in life, "timing is everything" to quote Six Feet Under (and many others, no doubt). Whatever the reason, I love the player, love the man, and hope he gets past this run of injuries as soon as possible 2/2

Thanks so much for the ask, chaps (also liked the way my name sake read the Q out) - very interesting to hear respective answers. My (third) take: the big-picture framing for this season is "win now", so I just wonder if MØ - being captain and given his own responsibility-taking personality - is 1/2
drjimmyp.bsky.social
Often with random occurrences, for good and bad, we just call them “luck” and either dismiss them as such or get superstitious about the cause(s). But is there a rational explanation for MØ’s misfortune perhaps (e.g. his timing is off as he’s trying too hard)? @gunnerblog.bsky.social #arsecastextra

Not results-driven though (in my case at least), based more on me being someone who doesn't believe in the fetishisation of transfers or that they make much of a difference in a player's first season (minimum). Rather, stability and its bedfellow consistency are king and queen here.

If it's any consolation, I don't think Liverpool were ever Arsenal's main rival this season (a transition one for the former on the pitch, plus a lot to deal with off it). Rather, City who - while not flawless - I still feel like people are sleeping on a bit despite having Rodri, Haaland, Donnarumma

10 games into season (all competitions), slew of injuries to key players, bunch of new ones being bedded in + it reads:

P10
W8
D1
L1
F20
A3
Clean sheets: 7

Conceded just once from open play (Haaland) having been to Old Trafford, Anfield, San Mamés, SJP + hosting City and bogey team West Ham 🔥 #AFC

Glad you said this, because he and Gakpo always stand out when I watch Liverpool for not quite being at the same talent level as their team mates

We are a society deficient in Vitamin N(uance). On the subject of health, get well soon Andrew 🍵

What you're saying is Noor 1 has seen a Marinakis team score against the mighty Arsenal this season?
drjimmyp.bsky.social
Bit of rustiness, especially from White, as well as not quite the right final decision on a few occasions in midfield and attack. Very promising though.

Imagine being cynical about someone unequivocally dedicated to a process of ongoing improvement and being best version of themself they can be. And then instilling it in their charges in pursuit of greatness. Such an ethos should be taken up by all, what a radically different world it would be if so

This blog is you at your imperious best, context is king! At least part of the problem is that there’s just not a lot new to say these days about an Arsenal so good and without any obvious weakness. As such, having not won one of the big two yet, reductiveness, binaries, and counterfactuals prevail.
drjimmyp.bsky.social
Also the brazen way Joelinton clapped back super disrespectfully at referee after getting booked would have surely earned him a second yellow in any other game. He's a bit teflon at the best of times, but took that as very indicative of the culture of impunity that seems to prevail in this fixture.

I suppose what I am most curious about is the thuggish that is allowed to pass (and tbf we got away with one yesterday on that front ourselves). Even with a febrile, hostile crowd, still seems (allowed to be) uniquely aggressive game for reasons I can't quite fathom ...
drjimmyp.bsky.social
Andrew wrote today he can't really explain why that fixture (esp. at SJP) is refereed the way it is. But can you speculate at least: (unconscious) bias of north vs. south gets triggered, money has changed hands only to call most blatant fouls, something else? @gunnerblog.bsky.social #arsecastextra

How fine the margins have been in the last week for Big Gabi: could be the “villain” after stepping into midfield against Citeh, going down way too easy yesterday and then shoving the lanky fella in face. Instead ends up scoring winner. Delighted for him and us, especially after Desgracia 1.0 + 2.0

Get well soon to Tino Livramento, never nice to see and football is all the better for having top players on the pitch. As for rest of Magpies, if you ever want to join the elite then you need to ditch the insanely small-time mentality (hint, big clubs don't sing "Same old x, always cheating") #NUFC

My neighbour just came round to see if I was dying, fortunately he's a football fan so he got it.

The nicest day in #Hamburg, I’m sure everyone says the same about where they live but no where I’d rather be when the weather like this
drjimmyp.bsky.social
To have this discussion gotta start with the caveat obvs he’s not a complete spoofer nor would players like Isak and Wirtz join if he was. But there is a question mark at least over future ability to deal with variance, an injury crisis, players’ decline / loss of form etc. “let’s see” territory rn.
drjimmyp.bsky.social
Although they’d never say it, wonder if Slot and higher ups see this as a transition season: won the league so pressure is off, huge amount of churn, went big on elite talents in a way not necessarily possible next summer (tournament window) but need time to bed in, Salah’s degree of decline tbd.
drjimmyp.bsky.social
Given LFC were super reluctant to give him a new contract until he went supernova last season and it became kinda obligatory, think the renewal was more a thank you than expectation of more of the same (backed up by their attacking recruitment this summer about long-term replacing him)
drjimmyp.bsky.social
Sadly he's going from Glasner to Glasscherbe when he inevitably joins Man United ... absolute triumph of coaching, shows how misguided the fetishisation of transfers is
