So hard to leave.

Red blood cells are analysed inside a lab-on-a-chip, a tiny device that condenses the complexity of a lab into postage-stamp size. Researchers are using these to tackle malaria with speed and precision.

In one week I'm off to far north Queensland. It has become an annual family tradition and one of the only holidays I genuinely relax.

Unfortunately I still have a to do list that's getting longer and the time remaining to do it keeps getting shorter.

One of the best academic experiences has to be receiving the Friday night chain email from the lead author to collaborators about a paper acceptance.

The (literally) overwhelming number of emails from my kids' school has also thrown into sharp relief the stress that is induced by my work email inbox.

I'm going to try inbox-zero again by way of email bankruptcy. Wish me luck - and I apologise for anyone caught in the abyss.

A compounding problem is a lot of the school communication is via compass - so a lot of the emails are: "a thing has been posted on compass" and then i have to 2FA log in there to see it.

Not sure I have the skills to develop a bot to do that for me.

There have been less than 145 school days so far this year, and I've received 163 emails from school.

This is simply too much information - I can not keep up.
