People and photos tell stories of expeditions at sea - but so do the ships themselves. This article from NPR shares the results of another look at the Endurance from Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. 🌊
Famed polar exploration ship Endurance not as strong as legend held, researcher says
Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton's crew famously survived after the Endurance became stuck in ice in 1915. A researcher says the ship was ill-equipped for the voyage and Shackleton was aware.

I'm so proud of Indiana and how she created a data visualization of ocean noise - through crochet! Keep an eye out for her at #AGU25 (*if she is confirmed for a poster, she'll bring her crocheted pieces with her to New Orleans!) 🧶

This episode of StoryCorps #TalesFromTheDeep highlights geochemist Chris Jones from EXP 398. Take a listen to learn how his time at sea expanded his interest in the intersections of society/human history, with geology/geologic history - and stories about bananas, Cheez-Its, and chocolate oranges ⚒️🌊
“Before this expedition, I had not made that connection of how my interest in human history and geology have melded so well”
Marine geochemist Christopher Jones has lots of food stories from his time on JOIDES Resolution, ranging from chocolate oranges to Cheez-Its. But he also has stories about working with fellow scientis...

This episode of StoryCorps #TalesFromTheDeep goes back to the days of the JOI (Joint Oceanographic Institutions) office. Take a listen to hear program manager Ellen Kappel discuss not only the people (the foundation of SciOD) but also the staff involvement in softball games and choir practice. 🌊⚒️
"I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Friday choir practice… if you’re leaving the office [early], you just say you’re going to choir practice"
From softball games to phone systems to Friday choir practice at the bar, this was all part of the life of Ellen Kappel in the Joint Oceanographic Institutions office. Ellen shares some highlights of ...

The #TalesFromTheDeep StoryCorps collection now has Tori Pavlovich from JOIDES Resolution EXP 402. Take a listen to Tori describe her journaling activities on board, her birthday celebration, and how the personal and professional connections she made at sea were just as unique and special. ⚒️🌊
"To other early career scientists that are like, oh, maybe I want to go out to sea... just ask. If I had never told my advisor..."
Tori Pavlovich, a rock magnetist from University of Utah, joined JOIDES Resolution for Expedition 402. She knew she would be celebrating her birthday while at sea with an incredibly unique birthday ce...

I'm still working my way around @biographic.bsky.social for ocean-themed stories for my students after the loss of Hakai Magazine. I'm finding excellent material - I'm hoping for more stories/videos like this! 🌊

I was surprised at the number of maritime projects the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum highlights - with the plate steel made here in the Greater Philadelphia Region! The steel went to the hull of JOIDES Resolution, the SS United States, the submersible Alvin, and... to GUPPY! [blog post] 🧪🌊

The latest #TalesFromTheDeep episode on the StoryCorps Archive is from Carl Brenner, director of the U.S. Science Support Program for scientific ocean drilling. Take a listen to Carl's background -you might be surprised at what he majored in at college- and his leadership role in this community. 🌊⚒️
"What scientific ocean drilling has done for the nation and globally is yielded a staggering amount of information about Earth history"
“The breadth of the science that is done in this program is pretty exciting and you don't have to be a trained marine geologist to appreciate that.” This quote comes from Carl Brenner, the director of...

I'm teaching a course on planetary geology this semester. I'm not going to shy away from what is happening at NASA. I will spend time in my course on the cuts, impacts, and work with my campus library on an advocacy event for @planetarysociety.bsky.social Day of Action to Save NASA Science.

I always try to connect the location I am speaking in with the topic I am speaking about. I thought that would be a stretch with scientific ocean drilling, but it turns out that not one but TWO parts of JOIDES Resolution were manufactured in the Greater Philadelphia region! 🧪🌊⚒️

There is so much history in my region connected to Glomar Explorer. I enjoyed doing a "deep dive" - not the story of its secret mission, but how it was "this close" to being the next scientific drilling vessel after Glomar Challenger (but then lost to Sedco/BP 471, renamed to JOIDES Resolution) 🧪⚒️🌊
