Dear predatory conference, if you want to be more convincing, at least pick a topic I have some vague knowledge of before sending me an invitation... I can confirm that I have no idea what to say about wave equations in cybersecurity 🤨 #AcademicSky #ScienceSky

Dear predatory conference, I was never going to go to your conference anyway. But pro tip: if you're trying to be enticing, maybe don't host your "conference" in the US. Have you seen the news lately? #AcademicSky #ScienceSky

This is a legitimate ethical consideration for LLM use and, as educators, we should encourage our students to critically think by discussing these issues with them (the paper below is useful). If they do not want to use AI for ethical reasons, this should be accommodated with diversified assessments

Claude, "We all know among Sauron's many evils was that he ran Mordor using an Excel spreadsheet with multiple tabs. Show me the spreadsheet"

It made 12 tabs "so bureaucratically complex that even the Eye of Sauron would need reading glasses to review it." Some very funny stuff. Creative, even.

"Managing Your Mental Health During Your PhD: A Survival Guide" has been out for 3 years. I don't do "proud" very often, but I am proud of the people I've helped through writing it. Thank you to everyone who's supported me with it and convinced me that writing it was a good idea.

Traditional publishing trying to capitalise on AI while gatekeeping at the same time *sigh*

A book about #GenAI in higher ed. My chapter included GenAI images. The publisher removed them. So, I published them anyway. This is my story of resistance. It’s a rebellion & roadmap for creative scholars pushing against academic gatekeeping. See what was meant to be unseen. #BeWayward #AcademicSky

🤯 Had to come up with 10 people who could assess my promotion application, but they couldn't be anyone I've ever collaborated with or really even know. It's a bit like being told to throw a dinner party, except you’re not allowed to invite anyone you know, even if they just borrowed your stapler. 🫠

There is a difference between interpretivist research and interpretivism as a paradigm. All qualitative research is interpretivist. Interpretivism is an understanding of reality, knowledge, and the role of the researcher. They are not interchangeable. - End of rant (for now) #AcademicSky

Tough time for many at ANU. At around midday yesterday staff received a university-wide email. The language was ambiguous and could be read to say all forced redundancies would stop. I received many messages from people being forced out. Were they now safe?
I am writing to you today with three key updates for our community regarding the Renew ANU Program:
1. The University leaders have confirmed that all future changes under Renew ANU will be achieved without involuntary redundancies. This means that all future changes under Renew ANU will be achieved through our other mechanisms, including lift and shift/ realignments, continuation of the Recruitment Advisory Committee (RAC), natural attrition, and voluntary separations. We will continue to create greater accountability for senior leaders to ensure compliance with budget and resource allocation.
2. The University's timeline for future change has been brought forward from 31 October to today, Wednesday 20 August 2025. This means that under Renew ANU, no further change proposals will be released in 2025, and as expressed above, no further job losses will occur through involuntary redundancy.
3. Finally, the University will open a second Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) for the entire community next week, with details released via On Campus next Tuesday.
