For #FossilFriday, we have a fossil from our editor John Whitlock.

This Diplodocus specimen is Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CM) 11161. It is essentially complete, largely undeformed, and has been studied so extensively; making it an exceptionally important fossil for understanding feeding 🦕

Yeah, T&F has 5 data policies, each more progressive. SURR is 2/5, we’re aiming for Open & FAIR (5/5). SURR gets authors used to mandatory data availability statements, and gives @brooke-long-fox.bsky.social & me input for journal guidance for when HB moves to Publicly Available (3/5) & beyond

Our 1st data policy change (from ‘basic’ to get to Open & FAIR). SURR mandates a data availability statement, telling us % of papers using data, and where they’re putting them. Our data editor is writing HB data policy & guidance, which will be ready for change to ‘Publicly Available’

Statement of commitment: Historical Biology will automatically offer Stage 1 in-principle acceptance (IPA) to any Stage 1 RR within the journal’s disciplinary scope that receives IPA at PCI RR, and will accept without further peer review any Stage 2 RR that has been recommended by PCI RR.

Disciplinary scope: Empirical research covering evolutionary and systematic biology through time. Fields included are: descriptive and comparative anatomy, taxonomy and nomenclature, philosophy of biology, descriptions of new datasets and methods, phylogenetics, statistical analyses, palaeobiology, palaeobiogeography, evolutionary processes and patterns, molecular paleontology, extinction, and taphonomy.

We will soon be changing our minimum Data Sharing Policy to ‘Share Upon Reasonable Request’ where authors agree to make data available provided this does not violate ethical concerns.
