🌟 Medical Students with Disabilities: Breaking Barriers & Adding Value

Being a med student is tough.

Being a med student with a disability is tougher.

#Disability doesn’t mean inability. It means resilience and perspective that enriches patient care.

DYK that individuals who are blind or visually impaired often face significant barriers when accessing healthcare?

Healthcare providers need to prioritize practices that ensure accessible services for everyone.

This includes accessible info and telehealth.

I wanted to love Hawaii.

But they won’t let me bring my service dog.

Just talked to the Creighton residents about Psychological Safety and how it relates to #Disability in Medicine!

We need to have more conversations like this to break down the toxic "culture of strength" in #MedEd!

⚠️ Rideshare service denial (again) ⚠️

It's dangerously cold, so I scheduled a rideshare instead of walking home. Made a note in my reservation that I have a service animal.

Waited 20 minutes. Driver would not let me in b/c of my dog and became hostile.

Walked home.

Not OK.

In literature, people with disabilities often fit into these tropes.

1) An oracle or sage
2) A villain
3) A pitiable figure

Rarely are they developed characters with depth.

Any book recommendations where a protagonist has a #Disability and doesn't fit these tropes??

❄️ Snowy day here in Omaha ❄️

Reminder to clear your sidewalks.

People with disabilities often rely on safe walkways for transportation.

Sometimes, people are surprised when they see me present.

How can I present a powerpoint and be #Blind?

Here's what I have to do:
1) Memorize the order of my slides or use large marker images
2) Memorize each slide
3) Hope my slide count isn't off 😓

🦮 🦮 Guide Dogs 101 🦮🦮

All guide dogs are service animals, but not all service animals are guide dogs.

Guide dog training consists of
🐶 1 year with a puppy raiser
🏫 1 year at an accredited school
❤️ 1 month with their matched handler

Basically, they are whizzes at Guide Dogology. 🤓

Dr. Gia is watching the #PuppyBowl!

She was excited to see that there were two dogs competing that had visual impairment.

Way to represent dogs with disabilities!

I have the experience of living is both the non-disabled and disabled world and have an observation.

👵Before #Disability, new acquaintances would talk to me.

🦮After disability, people talk to my guide dog or talk to me about my guide dog

Let's discuss.

📢 Include #Disability in #MedEd! 📢

Over 1 billion people worldwide live with a disability.

Medical education lacks training on #InclusiveHealthcare. This gap leads to misunderstandings, inaccessible healthcare, and poorer health outcomes.

🔄 Share and tag a MedEd leader!

In #MedEd, we are taught to work hard, and never complain or ask for anything. Needs = weakness.💪

But we are not robots. 🤖

Here's the irony:

The thing that makes me "dysfunctional" (#Blindness) is the thing that makes me a better doctor. 🤔

"Do not wait for someone else to come and speak for you. It's you who can change the world."

This quote reminds me of why it is important to elevate the voices of people with disabilities so we can change perceptions and advocate for #EqualRights.
