Was inspired to try my hand at designing at least the head of one of my DnD characters.

Meet Edith Goldmarsh! She's a Gold Dragonborn, an Oath of Ancients Paladin, she loves Bahamut, and she's got too much heart and muscle to have room for a brain. Also, she's easily distracted by butterflies.

No, I don't want your Codec.
No, I don't wanna give you mine.

Chiitan liking my silly little post about MKX is not what I expected to wake up to but I'm honored.

Mediocre and WAY overpriced. I'm glad I skipped this one and just watching the story mode on YouTube because hooboy, I'd have felt cheated if I paid almost as much as the base game for a follow-up story this mid. There's not even anything I'll add to the alt, there's just nothing to say here.

Once again, only okay. I liked it at first as a first impression for this new era of MK and the depth it gave to characters like Syzoth/Reptile and Baraka but looking back, it isn't really anything that special. And the villains aren't great either. Seems like that's something NRS can't quite nail.

Aftermath is the worst story in MK history. Worse than 4, worse than DA, worse than vs DC. I hate it. It ruins a perfectly fine ending for the sake of filling in a negligible plot hole and just takes an even bigger dump on its characters than the Midway era ever did. Just awful. More in alt.

You know what? I had fun with this one. It has its problems as well as some glaring inconsistencies, but it gave me a lot of the character moments I wanted to see, especially with Liu Kang after he'd been shat on for so long. Good thing there's no DLC to ruin it.

Okay but only just. The Kombat Kids are fine additions and all but you see the big twist of the story coming from a mile away and, honestly, the villains in this game are just not great. Or they're actively unlikable in all the wrong ways. Hi, D'vorah! More in alt.

A WELCOME return to form, both for gameplay and story! Admittedly, I'm not a fan of how whiny and petulant Liu Kang is here and once again it's a bunch of bad things happening to our heroes but I think it works better here with how MK handles its story from here on.
December 15, 2025 at 8:28 AM
NRS seems to count it so I will too. Believe it or not, this was actually my introduction to the story of Mortal Kombat so I kind of have a place in my heart for MK vs DC. It's still very bad, but kid me was under the impression almost everyone in MK was a murderous jerk so I owe a lot to this game.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel bored! 🎶

Kind of a shame the last game to have every MK character at the time is this meh, since we'll never have an opportunity for something like this again, but those endings + how boring Taven and Daegon are just tank things.
December 15, 2025 at 8:28 AM
And the downward trend continues with more crappy thing happening to our heroes. Okay, that's unfair. at least, from what I can tell, some of the "good" endings are canon and I do like that this is our first instance of a heroic Ermac. Still not a fan but it IS better. More in alt.
December 15, 2025 at 8:28 AM
... bad. Yeah, apologies to fans of DA (and 3D MK in general) but I do not like this era. Doesn't help that it begins with Shao Kahn getting killed by a duo who were, at the time, jobbers (questionable already,) and then killing Liu Freaking Kang. Even today, I feel like that's lame. More in alt.

I actually really like how 4 develops the story... on paper. In practice, of course, it's hilariously bad, though I'd argue that's the fault of the voice acting and awkward animations. I liked it when I was a kid getting into MK but I think even then I knew the endings were so bad they're good.
December 15, 2025 at 8:28 AM
Just lumping all versions of 3 here and once again, I gotta give Mortal Kombat points. Shao Kahn subverting the rules and basically having won before the game even began is a brilliant master stoke! And the stuff with Sindel is great too. Where the hell is our adaptation of THIS version of MK3?
December 15, 2025 at 8:28 AM
Credit where it's due, the game's set up has a little bit more going on with it this time! Shifting allegiances, the mystery behind the new Sub-Zero, generally expanding on the lore of the first game. The story is still just "here's why everyone's fighting" but they clearly had some ideas here.
December 15, 2025 at 8:28 AM
If there were ever a classic fighter that embodied the idea that the story is just a flimsy excuse to get a bunch of characters to fight each other... well, okay, I guess it'd be Street Fighter too but yeah, the original Mortal Kombat barely has a story worth acknowledging. Next.

Imagine being the rival who's focused the most on becoming the strongest Pokemon Trainer only to get swept, from Turn 1 to Turn Done, by an Emolga.

Effectively a remake of SouCalibur 1 with DLC and some Groh related set up for future games that have yet to materialize. As such, I enjoy it about as well as SCI. I wish the graphics have moved on past 4 but it's an effective retelling of the game's story for the then-modern day. A welcome return.

Speaking of let downs, this is why you don't rush your games, people! The opening final battle between Siegfried and Nightmare is absolute cinema but they dropped the ball HARD with Sophitia's kids, and the other new kids basically have nothing going on. A potentially good story squandered. Bummer.
December 2, 2025 at 7:29 AM
Felt like a disappointing finale at the time but, 17 years later, I can appreciate what it tried to do more: the story may be over (for now) but it was neat to see how each character's journey changed them by the end. Also thanks Hilde for giving Siegfried a better ending than his actual ending. lol

Personal favorite of the series! The story returns to the forefront and in full force, feeling very reminiscent of Soul Blade with its multiple endings and even with each character's playthrough feeling like a natural extension of that game's Edge Master Mode. More in alt.
