It sounds of a piece with the government’s tendency to do things that will create a fillip of vaguely positive publicity for a single media cycle, with little interest and less care about how it will play out in the longer term.

"Enshrined in law" is a particular bugbear for @davidallengreen.bsky.social for, I believe, similar reasons.

When I did this to my mom as a teenager, I had to make dinner for the family later in the week. It was a “You inconvenience me, you make it up to me by giving me back some time later” arrangement. Bonus: I went off to uni knowing how to make several different dinners!

In @physicsworld.bsky.social's 2015 "Book of the Year", the author writes extensively about her (eventually successful) quest to get Brockman to become her literary agent. The book is overall very good, but that aspect of it has aged like unpasteurized milk. physicsworld.com/a/quest-to-u...

I’ve never understood why Edmund betrayed Peter, Susan and Lucy for the disgusting fruity sickliness of Turkish delight. I know, rationing, the war, etc., but still.

Also banoffee pie. I’ve got a sweet tooth, but not for that.

Megan gave me some great advice on novel #1 that inspired me to start novel #2 (which I *will* finish one of these days). I'm so sorry this is happening to her. Please send my best wishes to her and her family (widely defined).

The technology is a tool. It makes it easier for those people to behave that way, and it drastically enhances the amount of tedious-to-manage slop they can produce in a given time period.

Oh but it’s not just students. This student-oriented journal is merely the tip of the extremely large iceberg that @chrislintott.bsky.social happens to be seeing.

I think you’ll find proponents of both interpretations!

I’m in the early stages of learning German, and my current favourite is viereck. Because yes, a square *is* a thing with four corners, so it makes sense to call it vier-Eck(e).

That looks…infinitely posher than the Scrabster-Stromness ferry I caught during Reading Week at St Andrews 20-mumble years ago. (Were they seriously expecting me to spend the *whole week* studying for exams when an epic train and boat journey was *right there* for the taking?!?)
