An excerpt reads:

He sighed, eyes glancing down to her shaking hands, twisting together between them. His own hands lifted to cup around hers, completely engulfing them within his broad grip. It was a gentle gesture, one to calm her nervousness. But instead it caused her cheeks to ignite, flushing blood red. If Kaidan noticed, though, he didn’t mention it, instead continuing, “This is the longest I’ve spent with anyone... in a while. Yeah, I’ve run a few bounties with other mercenaries here and there, but this. What we are? I haven’t had a companion like you in a long time.”

Sabine blinked, her mouth falling slightly agape, cheeks still blazing. Her heart thudded hard against her ribs, so loud to her ears she was sure he could hear it. Is he? This isn’t… no, definitely not. Absolutely not.

Kaidan tilted his head as he looked at her, a goofy grin spreading on his face. “I’m saying… I want to know if you still want me at your side not as a mercenary under obligation, but as your friend, your ally.”

An excerpt of writing reads:

Sabine awoke to the feeling of cold, damp stone under her back and Kaidan’s warm palm pressed against her cheek. Her head was lifted, placed atop something soft. “Hey, hey— shit. Wake up!”

Her eyes felt glued shut and she couldn’t force her mouth open to speak. The warmth of his palm suddenly left her cheek. And then, a sharp smack of pain vibrated through her face. Her eyes flew open and she hissed, lifting her own hand to cradle her abused cheek.

He had her head propped up into his lap, atop a pelt from his pack. His face loomed above her and he looked just as shocked as she did. “Oh, shit— sorry, you were…”

Sabine used her free hand to push herself upright and Kaidan stood up, now towering over her disheveled form on the floor.

“So your first reaction when someone faints is to hit them?”
