Visited the Ushiku Daibutsu in Ibaraki, the fifth largest statue in the world and the largest bronze Buddha. Over 100m tall without pedestal (about 2.5x the Statue of Liberty). Really amazing and powerful. An elevator inside takes you up about 85 meters to the window slats you can see in the chest.

Finally have a bookshelf near the kitchen for some cookbooks! Favorites here are López-Alt's Food Lab, Bourdain's Appetites, T-Pain's Can I Mix You a Drink?, Boba Guys' The Boba Book, Coldicott's Tokyo Cocktails, Ripert's Avec Eric, and Yamaguchi's Roy's Feasts from Hawaii. #food #books

I get to watch and listen to my oldest kid sing along to songs during 紅白 now. 18-year-old me trying (and mainly failing) to watch this online 20 years ago wouldn't believe that I'd be living in Japan or that I'd have kids growing up here. I'm grateful for being able to immigrate and live life here.

In my Eating Cultures class this year, I used J Strautman's TTRPG Insatiable Cravings. For 4 sessions, students created and played in worlds and characters. We concluded on Halloween, and here I am giving vampire David from The Lost Boys vibes as I coach them along. I love teaching and I love games.

In my Eating Cultures class this year, I used J Strautman's TTRPG Insatiable Cravings. For 4 sessions, students created and played in worlds and characters. We concluded on Halloween, and here I am giving vampire David from The Lost Boys vibes as I coach them along. I love teaching and I love games.

I love Rhythm + Flow so much, both seasons. D Smoke completely deserved the first award. Jay Taj got robbed on this one. DreTL is definitely interesting but doesn't look ready to take advantage of what's ahead of him. Spotify monthly listeners of the two clearly show my feelings too.

Academia needs to encourage students to take risks and be creative, not play it safe and follow the crowd. So many syllabi are threatening and limiting when they could be inviting and playful. You can still ask students to do good work and learn without stifling creativity and demanding rigor.
