It was just right for today. And nice to be reminded that keeping things simple can be the best strategy.

#kai Dinner: it would have been much fancier, but I felt a touch of the hangries coming on… Chicken livers and eggplant in a teriyaki marinade, served with quinoa and grilled asparagus and a reduction of the remaining marinade with splashes of beef stock and Shao Xing cooking wine.
A very brown dinner plate: eggplant and chicken livers over quinoa and asparagus.

Delicious! But sadly, not quite as sustaining as my usual savoury breakfasts.

#kai Bircher-style muesli with blueberries, apple, maple syrup and black tahini. Breakfast of champions of a certain age.
A deep bowl holds a serving of creamy muesli blobbed with black tahini and edged with apple slices. Also visible: a pool of blueberry juice and trickles of maple syrup.

The bowl’s rim is decorated either a band of forget-me-nots and butterflies.

If Nicola Willis thinks we “shouldnt be so precious that we can’t use metaphorical speech” can we go back to why Chlöe Swarbrick was punished so heavily for her comments on the government’s spinelessness?

And a PSA: if you too find massaging kale a rather distasteful experience, you’ll be pleased to hear that tossing it with a little olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and bashing it with a wooden spoon works just as well. #kai

#kai Dinner – Operation Eat All The Veg continues. The Oh She Glows’ detox salad (cauliflower, broccoli, carrot, sunflower seeds, currants, kale, lots of parsley and lots of lemon) with brined and air-fried chicken breast, kūmara and NZ yam/oca. And more avocado because it’s also avocado week.
Dinner as described in post.

#pukapuka Finished this last night and sat staring into space for ten minutes, consumed by sadness for a little boy who just wanted to feel safe.

#pukapuka Today’s reading and oof, but Hoey writes some heartbreaking sentences.
‘At the time, before I knew that some people smash holes in their life on purpose, I thought Dad just needed somewhere to store his words.’
The cover of Dominic Hoey’s novel 1985 A black and white photo of Crummer Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland. The title is rendered in a spacies game typeface in a bright grassy green.

#kai Lunch – the OMG-it’s-a-veggie-box-week-special-panic-salad: kūmara, cauliflower, broccolini, spinach, edamame and avocado, all daubed either tahini, chilli crisp and lemon.
Salad composed of listed ingredients. Lots of different greens with chunks of red-skinned kūmara and smears of chilli crisp.
