My oldest started kindergarten in 2020, so perhaps the change was initiated before the legal mandate, because she had phonics at Dowling from the beginning.

I can only speak from experience as a parent of 2 kids in Minneapolis public schools--they teach reading via phonics here

As with many things, I think capturing the narrative is essential. If a white man doesnt get hired one narrative can be "reverse racism." Another narrative can be "neoliberalism and anti-intellectualism." The latter is both more correct and politically better.

I'm in the same boat in terms of timing and not begrudging my personal circumstances. OTOH I was straight up told by a faculty member one place I interviewed that they wouldn't hire me because I'm a white man. It's not surprising that some people would react to that in bad ways.

I was a department assistant during a search when the faculty head of the search told me we couldn't hire one of the candidates because he was gay, and he "wouldn't like living in" the town where the Uni was.
