They lost this round because they're amateurs and clowns 🤡, but it's clear from across the Atlantic what more organised (and well-funded) authoritarians can do to the media. Let's not get complacent.

Quite. I would be interested to know exactly where the pressure comes from here. Particularly if it's self-censorship.

And, to be fair to the authors, the likes of Google et al. caved to the Orange Tyrant pretty much immediately. So much for being our corporate overlords.

The lead author's institute is US, so it'd be difficult to pushback there without potential consequences. And, for an ECR, that'd be a stretch. Hopefully we'll just have a ~4 year window of nomenclature insanity before normality is restored.

Possibly a coincidence, but it's difficult not to notice the word "petroleum" in this journal's title and not to suspect this is related to the choice of nomenclature. #BigOil being an Orange Tyrant fan. However, I say this in complete ignorance - it's likely this is me making a false connection.

Except, of course, if it's being used by savvy local communicators to make struggles in these nations more understandable to important external players. Then it would make a lot more sense to me. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to clarify.

Far outside my experience/expertise, but I'm still surprised to hear this given the branding (and it is branding) makes most sense in western nations with a particular demographic stratification and history. Where nations are dominated by a young demographic it's harder to see why it would be used.
dryool.bsky.social
I seriously doubt that - bar the age range being about right - that the "Gen Z" terminology is meaningful here. The youthful demography of these nations, in particular, is completely different from western nations where the term has more cultural currency. It's just lazy using it here.

NutGEnIE 1.0: nutrient cycle extensions to the cGEnIE Earth system model to examine the long-term influence of nutrients on oceanic primary production
Abstract. Understanding the nuances of the effects of nutrient limitation on oceanic primary production has been the focus of many bioassay experiments by oceanographers. A theme of these investigatio...

The absolute state of a "newspaper" that publishes a flat-out ridiculous - and offensive - comparison between two murdered media figures. Even an AI wouldn't be so moronic as to conflate a journalist out doing her job with a racist, homophobic, white supremacist ideologue. You should be ashamed.

Commonise costs, privatise profits - the CC-PP game. A staple of parasitic forms of "capitalism" the world over.

It really is the last roll of the dice for Badenoch and she's blown it. This will just alienate another block of Conservative support and gain her nothing as she - belatedly - arrives at a party Farage has already crashed and trashed.

(Well, obviously not *all*, but a good fist is being made)

This sort of deep-dive dissection into the motivations of the terrible people who, somehow, have control of the levers of power is pretty much absent from most media channels. At the very point when we most need such scrutiny. Someone please give this guy a job.

What kind of moron says "three to four days" when there are lives on the line?

Rightly or wrongly (100% the latter) this asshat has power over people's lives ... and he trots out vague bullshit deadlines?

Intriguing / depressing 🇬🇧 vs. 🇺🇸 divergence in the news today. While 🇬🇧 medics are bemoaning the rollout of a telehealth scheme as damaging to patients (esp. non-digital seniors), seniors in the 🇺🇸 actually face a loss of such services ahead of yet another retarded govt shutdown.

That's good to know - thanks. It might also make the whole process of tallying up the "fallen" much easier for the owner of the @reformexposed.bsky.social account.

And simultaneously horrific at what this technology can do so effortlessly without further human input.

Saw this and thought that. And AI was happy to oblige.

It would be nice to accompany these regular suspensions / resignations / defenestrations of Reform with a tally of how many have fallen so far. I've completely lost track.

Important to remember that just a few decades ago US anti-abortionism was a fringe movement of secondary interest to the Republican party. But marrying the zeal of its fervent adherents with the resources of malevolent oligarchs got them to a dominant position today. Let's not make the same mistake.
