It worked. A majority of the public fell for it, even though the FBI concluded the Guard lied about it. The Guard was exonerated by Ohio and later, charges were dropped against guardsmen. The GOP are masters at spin and underhandedness.

Kent State, 1970: First they claimed self-defense because they felt threatened by the protesters surrounding them. Then they claimed someone shot at them first. Then they tried to justify it by portraying protesters as commies radicals blowing up campuses.

It worked. A majority of the public fell for it, even though the FBI concluded the Guard lied about it. The Guard was exonerated by Ohio and later, charges were dropped against guardsmen. The GOP are masters at spin and underhandedness.

When I think about the FBI, I think of the story I saw recently when an FBI father seemingly turned his back on his Marine son because he had foolishly joined up in '68, when dad and his coworkers knew that the powers that be had NO intention of winning in Vietnam. FBI knew then but couldn't tell.
