I think I should drop it, because my obsession with improving assignment prompts is unimportant compared to the fact that the university should be standing with the TA.

Absolutely. But depending on where this course falls in the sequence, or if it’s a GE course for non-majors, that needs to be explicitly taught.

Sure. But assuming it’s a course for non-majors that satisfies a general ed social science requirement, teaching the student what “responsive to the text means” is the job of the instructor.
And the TA was clearly trying to do that. I’m not sure the professor was helping. The prompt was not.

I teach undergrads, including classes that meet GE requirements so are taken by students who have never and will never take another class in my department.
Unless the class has pre-reqs that would mean students already know the standards of the discipline that prompt is not sufficient.

The prompt I read was linked here. I think the link was Yahoo news. It seemed very concerned with students not writing a summary of the article and suggested “A discussion of why you feel the topic is important” as one option. Nothing about sources or evidence.

Has the syllabus been posted somewhere? Because the assignment/prompt itself doesn’t set the standard that the TA seems to be expecting. I’d like to see if the syllabus laid out more explicit expectations for reaction papers.

I order pizza for high school groups fairly regularly (theater mom) and we’ve settled into 50% cheese, 25% pepperoni, and 25% barbecue chicken. Perhaps students a few years older would eat veggies on their pizza, but our vegetarians just want plain cheese.

Not counting writers I follow here because I already like their books, I can think of eight authors whose books I bought because of a post here. Not always a post they made, though. Some were other people posting about the book.
