I'm sure there was some behind the scenes coordination of intentionally riling people against each other, but I think a lot of folks these days really underestimate how much of a backlash there was against hipsterism and legacy media.

Whip-chasing Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 into a hard deadline fucking broke them, then they got locked into the Anthem mines. One of the most depressing downfall stories in gaming. You really don't hate EA enough.
