Get to know me with a series of post threads.
You could start with this thread about the comic book series "PAKLIS."
dustinweaver.bsky.social
What is PAKLIS?
PAKLIS is an ongoing anthology comic series that I make (mostly) on my own and publish through Image Comics.

In my top 3 comics of all time. This comic is many things, among them, an amazing war comic.

He was super fun to draw.

I aimed to show a lot of respect to Art without doing an impersonation.

My original idea for this cover looked like this, but I decided to not use this because I knew the characters would have a bit of a redesign and, at that time, I didn't know what they would look like. Also, I learned that Longshot himself was not a major part of the story.

I had no idea what the logo and all the dressing would look like, so I just used an old Longshot cover.

I scan my sketches, put it together digitally and put some tones in so I can see the composition. I then remove all the tones and print the sketch in blue.

I always draw in a sketchbook. Sometimes I draw parts of a piece separately like this.

I'll share some process pictures.

I was literally just wondering if you'd done an ENO UNIVERSE playlist and I missed it.

Gyo is so good. One of my faves too.

Junji Ito's Dissolving Classroom? Lots of people melting in that.

Nice! Very cool to see your take on these characters.

I missed that one! HA. Yeah, it's not good!

While a mainstream/commercially styled, creator will use a term like "writer/artist."
I think the dichotomy in American comics between being commercial and being art is its unhealthiest trait.
dustinweaver.bsky.social
I think because mainstream American comics are usually created by a writer & an illustrator, & indie/alternative comics are usually created by one person, the term "cartoonist" is associated with indie comics & thus a "type" of comic.

Yeah. I know this is how a lot of people define it. I still can't make cartoonist connect with comic books in my mind. At best, I can associate it with comic strips. It's also a term that I feel has come to signal that you make a certain kind of comic, I could be wrong. Is that feeling unfounded?

I see lots of talk about the need to get wider audiences interested in comics. I see much less about how comics creators need to provide the kinds of stories that draw in wider audiences.

We can’t complain about lack of interest if we don’t at least try to meet people where they are.

Anyone have a particularly hot comic take?
dustinweaver.bsky.social
I associate the word cartoon with cartoons and have never gotten to a place where cartoonist feels right for comics, though I know I'm wrong. If I use the term "comic book artist" I'm referring to someone who creates the entire comic, though I realize that is also confusing.
