Chappell Roan is playing LA this weekend and it’s also my birthday weekend so when it was first announced I tried to get tickets and was waitlisted.

Guess who can now get tickets (3 days before the show) but now logistically can’t go as I’d have to book everything last minute.

Then I'll give them some suggestions from this thread and we'll work together through the rest of the semester to figure out what is the best method for them. Last time I taught intermediate, it was 2nd semester, so they had already done this the previous semester. (2/2)

Thank you everyone who has given me advice on this. I am going to let them do the first attempt on their own (with two guidelines, no written translation and clean text in class) and have a class discussion about what strategies they used and what was effective and what wasn't. (1/2)

So we're finally getting to the 'reading' portion of my Reading Greek Prose class, and I need to highlight to my students how 'reading' is different from 'translating' so they don't come to class with written out translations. What tips would you give a student in this situation?

Regardless of how you feel about The Life of a Showgirl, implying that “The Prophecy” is just “all of that bitching, wishing on a shooting star” is such a devaluation of her own work that makes me so sad.

It is barely one in the afternoon and I’m already ready to give up on the day thanks to the American healthcare/insurance system and dumb laundry rooms.

Pretending SoCal gets a fall by eating apples and caramel.

Class prep has been taking up way too much of my time since the beginning of the semester and I look forward to when it doesn't take a whole day just for one class...

Some of my hesitation about this album comes because I /loved/ TTPD. So many songs on that album to this day, almost two days later, give me goosebumps because of the lyrics, or production, or combination.

So I hope you don't mind if I say tortured for a while longer (5/5)

tl;dr: I was hoping for "they told me all of my cages were mental / so I got wasted like all my potential" ... "I was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere / fell behind all my classmates and I ended up here" with a pop beat and I didn't get that (4/)

In the end, the album is much less "drowning in a bathtub full of flowers" and more a love album to Travis.

Yet again, not necessarily bad. I love seeing a woman embracing her sexuality publicly . Especially since TSwift for years fought against that as a promotional tool (3/)

It is not necessarily bad, but when talking about it, TS said it would be the storytelling of folklore with the pop of 1989/rep/etc. But it does not live up to that.

At the Spotify pop up in New York, one of the things included was a bathtub full of flowers (2/)

My thoughts 24 hours into the Showgirl era (and having seen the movie thing).

I don't know if this will ever be my favorite album. We've had a long run of extremely lyrically complex albums, and Showgirl is not that. (1/)

I gotta say, my birthday is October 9, so one week from the 2nd. This means I got an early birthday present since Showgirl technically came out on 10/2 for us pacific time zone people.

Already plotting a way to fit “Honey” from “The Life of A Showgirl” into a piece about women and bees in Antiquity (featuring [misogynist] Simonides but also Dido as queen bee)

Overall, my opinion on the album is that is an album of subverting expectations. The songs that by their titles we thought would be about TSwift's public struggles were actually about personal tragedies. Whereas the intimate songs were about public (ish) scenarios. (5/5)

I loved the subversion of gendered stereotypes in "The Life of a Showgirl" with 'Her father whored around like all men did". That being said, inserting the recording from the Eras tour kind of destroyed me emotionally. (4/)

"Wi$h Li$t" despite the playful title is a sweet song to Travis.

"Wood" has a pleasant disco vibe. But is also the most sexy song of the album.

Cancelled is giving underworld "I salute you if you're much too much to handle" (3/)

Like, I made a joke friendship bracelet about "Ruin the Friendship" and it doesn't fit the vibe at all...

My theory is that Actually Romantic is about Matty but in a passive aggressive way. But also I get hardcore Sapphic vibes from it...

he #tslifeofashowgirl review you didn't ask for

"The Fate of Ophelia" is a sequel of "Cassandra" from TTPD

Opalite is a bop. And not just because I am an October baby who loves opal.

"Ruin the Friendship" is giving track 5 more than "Eldest Daughter" (1/)

I was wrong, Apple came through this time. 1989 TV it failed me.

In the last 5 minutes before #TheLifeOfAShowgirl, tips for people like me who usually buy digital albums

1. The digital album won’t be available until later. If you want to listen when it comes out, stream.

2. Spotify is usually more on top of things for releases.

Since Showgirl is releasing at 12am eastern world wide, I should be able to listen at 9pm my time and I am so excited.

I was starting to get a little worried there wouldn’t be a Rome Prize application process this year due to all the budget cuts, so I’m glad to see they sent out details for information sessions.
