This meant that what _had_ been a 3-way tie was now a 2-way tie, so the first tie breaker (head-to-head record) applied, which meant that team _A_ came in first because they had beaten team B in their head-to-head race.

That was because teams A and B lost their races in 5 heats, while C lost their race in 3 heats.

When I went back and scored this division using the 2-points-per-race-plus-1-point-per-heat rules, something interesting happened. Each team got 15 points for the 3 races they won, but teams A and B both got 2 points for the races they lost while team C got 0 points for the race they lost

Since it was a circular 3-way tie (each team beat one of the other 3), the first tie breaker didn't apply, so the second tie breaker determined the overall placement of B-A-C.

Team A beat team B, team B beat team C, and team C beat team A. Team A's best time was 16.8 seconds, team B's best time was 16.4 seconds, and team C's best time was 17.0 seconds. The tie breakers were (1) head-to-head record and (2) best time overall.

A while back there was a 1 day tournament where there was a 5 team division running a single round robin with a 3 of 5 racing format. At the end of racing there was a 3-way tie for first place, with (let's call them) teams A, B, and C each winning 3 of their 4 races.

and in particular I want to see if the results of a tournament might turn out differently if we did it this way instead of our usual 1-point-per-race scoring. And I found one.

I kind of like the reward aspect of this scoring scheme, so I was wondering if we might use it in our region. Of course whenever you change the way you do things you want to understand what the ramifications are,

Again, add up all the points at the end of the tournament to determine placements.
It's a way of rewarding teams that force their opponents to work harder to beat them.

At this tournament, they awarded 1 point for each _heat_ that was won _plus_ two points for the winner of the race. So the winner of the race got 5 tournament points (2 points for the race plus one point for each of the 3 heats they won) and the loser of the race got either 0, 1, or 2 points.

In our region when we're doing 3 of 5 racing we usually award 1 tournament point to the winner of each race, then at the end of the tournament we add up the points to determine placements.

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of traveling to North Carolina for a NAFA Region 9 tournament. It was a nice tournament and we had a lot of fun, but the way they scored the tournament was a little bit different than what we're used to in our region.
