flat and boring from start to finish, feels like miike is fully in netflix paycheck mode with this one. not even the usually so great shota sometani is allowed to give this one the energy it so desperately needs. just a complete waste of time, sadly.

a long, long overdue rewatch, and one that thankfully held up perfectly! out of all of his adaptations, i think this is the one where his style best synthesizes with the original work. as far as darker superhero stories goes, this is without a doubt the definitive one.

a sort of attempt to make a big crime epic in the vein of goodfellas or alike, except through the lens of miike and his love of yakuza. feels a bit restrained overall, even if there are some occasional outbursts of the flair i expect from miike. still pretty good though.

miike takes on a story about male love behind bars, but he does it by way of the most arthouse i've ever seen him get. a non-linear and messy storyline, prison sets designed to evoke the feeling of a weird stage play and the outside world made to look almost ethereal.
