If anyone ever puts you down for having dyslexia, don't believe them. Being dyslexic can actually be a big advantage and it has certainly helped me.

The two hemispheres of the brain are more symmetrical in people with dyslexia.

In non-dyslexic people, the left hemisphere of the brain is usually slightly larger than the right hemisphere in areas associated with language. This difference suggests a difference in how the brain processes language.

Dyslexia is associated with distinct differences in brain structure & function particularly in areas involved in language processing, reading, and phonological awareness

These differences are not deficits but rather variations in the way the brain processes information

Somebody asked me if I could go back and start again with a different brain, would I. Years ago I thought yes, I would, and now I know I wouldn’t. Because whatever challenges I had in school, I guess they forced me to where I am today. So I now see them as an asset

Why is reading recovery bad in general and why is it especially bad for kids with dyslexia?

Most schools don’t use Reading Recovery for struggling readers any longer. But, a few still do, so you want to pay attention and make sure your child isn’t put in Reading Recovery

I think if you can show a kid that reading can actually be fun, it can make you laugh, inspire imagination - that can make a huge difference.

It is important for parents with kids learning to read to understand automaticity.

Automaticity is being able to read a word fast, accurately and effortlessly rather than slowly sounding it out.

Words that end in ch and tch
In one syllable words like patch, fetch, crunch and grinch, the tch and ch at the end of the words sound the same, like /ch/.

Why do we spell them differently?

One way to help your child learn sight words is to write the words on an index card. Then have them draw a picture to help remember the word. Then start practicing reading the words on their cards, eventually they can cover up the picture and read them without looking. #dyslexia #dyslexiatutor
