The moment when you find your name in the Epstein files.

It would be perfectly possible for #BBC to headline that he never met Epstein.

Jeez, didn't imagine for one minute...
Crappy surface car parking replacing dignified semi.
RIP Norwood Villas.

Always interesting to see a building in cross section, always sad to see a potentially useful adaptable building go.

Would make a fine Aldi car park extension... because everyone drives the half mile there... because there's no active travel infrastructure around.

The Stadhuis is so spectacular on the outside that its interior, fine though it is, is something of an anti-climax.

Aside from safety and space there is pollution. The haze is evident above datum, here at Monte Mario.

Cycle safe Appian Way. Though needless to say once left there are unwelcome encounters. The bike hire team didn't know if there was a close pass rule, and confidently advised that drivers would ignore it if there was. There is: Codice Stradale, Art148 aci.gov.it/codice-della...

In 8 days I saw the aftermath of two pedestrian run downs. There is absolute priority for vehicles with vestigial space for people, visible in the simplest of details (Via Guerrieri).

With lack of infra comes bad attitude. I’m reminded of the The Chariot Race by Alexander von Wagner, c1882, in Manchester City Art Gallery. Rome has always had a driver problem.

Roadworks: temporary works for vehicles. Piazza Venezia roadworks = some plastic bricks to direct cars, but absolutely no thought about space needed for pedestrians. Eventually a uniform parked up and started whistling fortissimo at errant pedestrians.

With uncontrolled vehicle priority comes a cluttered urban scene (Pyramid of Cestius, Piazza Bologna).

Stroads of EUR. With the 1930 fascist tendency for bigness in all things came the big highway.

The limestone kerbs are a nice touch, but they all too often define a walkway that is unsuitably narrow (Via del Corso streetview photo). Sometimes there’s no pavement (Via di Porta San Sebastiano). Sometimes it just stops (Porta Gianicolense).

Worn Out Paint. How can these crossings be seen at night in wet conditions?

Piazza Sant Ignazio, a popular urban space – perhaps THE baroque urban space, has a constant stream of vehicles passing through brushing people aside.

Parking Lot Piazzas (P. S Bernardo, P. Puscinula, P. Costaguti, P. Collegio Romano), and everywhere.

There’s so much heritage around even in the suburbs, it becomes treated with contempt. (Aqua Alexandria, Tor Fiscale).

Heritage Islands. Often the heritage icon is marooned in a sea of tarmac. The Coliseum itself was until 2013. Anyone heading for the supposedly erotic Fontana delle Naiadi in Piazza della Repubblica might find the constant gyration of cars and buses cools the mood.

Aurelian Squeezethroughs. Gateways in the Aurelian Wall are generally narrow arched portals, some enlarged over the years; all are pinch points with little space for the pedestrian and definitely no dedicated cycle space.
