After weeks of relative quiet, Border Patrol agents raided a Home Depot in Westlake on Wednesday as a top federal agent warned, "We're not leaving," and posted images of half a dozen border agents running from a Penske truck through the parking lot. As many as 16 immigrants were reported rounded up and arrested in what U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Greg Bovino called "Operation Trojan Horse." The early morning raids revived fears of more widespread sweeps that organizers had hoped would ease with a federal judge's order, affirmed by a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel, that immigration officials cannot racially profile people or use roving patrols to target immigrants. "For those who thought Immigration enforcement had stopped in Southern California, think again," acting U.S. attorney Bill Essayli posted on X, shortly after the raid. "The enforcement of federal law is not negotiable and there are no sanctuaries from the reach of the federal government."

The boarding schools were just one part of what several people born into 3HO describe as a nearly 50-year-long child-rearing experiment gone horribly wrong. In 3H0 ashrams, summer camps, and Indian boarding schools, they suffered sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuse, as well as physical assault, malnourishment, medical neglect, unsanitary conditions, corporal punishment, solitary confinement, hazing, and bullying. The abuse went unaddressed until 2020 when adult survivors came forward to tell their stories. Two years later, the Siri Singh Sahib Corporation (SSSC), which oversees 3H0, acknowledged harm caused within their schools and institutions and established the Independent Healing and Reparations Program for the Sikh Dharma Community, which ended in December 2023. Nearly 600 survivors filed claims alleging thousands of incidents of abuse.

You are so wrong about the numbers
Most Latinos, like Black Americans, did not vote for Trump. According to national polls, 56% of Latinos who voted cast their ballot for Kamala Harris, while 42% went for Trump. Yes, Trump made gains among Latino men, but gains don’t equate to dominance. The Latino vote split along familiar gender and generational lines, just like our communities. We can’t turn a sampling of voter turnout into “most Latinos voted for Trump,” and we can’t let bad math be an excuse to justify apathy. And there’s this one: “I ain’t marching for nobody that won’t march for me.” Or its equally tired fraternal twin: “Latinos don’t like us anyway.” This is scarcity-minded, historically illiterate nonsense that treats solidarity as some sort of tit-for-tat transaction. If that’s how our ancestors thought, then there wouldn’t have been an Underground Railroad, no Civil Rights Act, A Voting Rights Act, or a Montgomery Bus Boycott. Solidarity is a strategy, not some popularity contest.

Dehumanization has fueled innumerable acts of violence, human rights violations, war crimes, and genocides. It makes slavery, torture, and human trafficking possible. Dehumanizing others is the process by which we become accepting of violations against human nature, the human spirit, and, for many of us, violations against the central tenets of our faith. How does this happen? Maiese explains that most of us believe that people’s basic human rights should not be violated—that crimes like murder, rape, and torture are wrong. Successful dehumanizing, however, creates moral exclusion. Groups targeted based on their identity—gender, ideology, skin color, ethnicity, religion, age—are depicted as “less than” or criminal or even evil. The targeted group eventually falls out of the scope of who is naturally protected by our moral code. This is moral exclusion, and dehumanization is at its core. Dehumanizing always starts with language, often followed by images. We see this throughout history. During the Holocaust, Nazis described Jews as Untermenschen—subhuman. They called Jews rats and depicted them as disease-carrying rodents in everything from military pamphlets to children’s books. Hutus involved in the Rwanda genocide called Tutsis cockroaches. Indigenous people are often referred to as savages. Serbs called Bosnians aliens. Slave owners throughout history considered slaves subhuman animals.

Sometimes my heart catches in my throat and I have to stop for a second with my hand on a doorknob or the cold metal of a key, assemble in my heart the grace of all we have to believe in, and say my own prayer for us all -- that we will find the way through each hour of our lives that will have been worthy of the task. In the long run I find it hardest to bear adversaries on the other side of the spectrum: those who couldn’t care less, who won’t or can’t fathom the honest depths of love and grief, who op out of the bull-ride through life in favor of the sleeping birth. These are the ones who say its ridiculous to imagine that the world could be made better than it is. The more sophisticated approach, they suggest, is to accept that we are all on a jolly road trip down the maw of catastrophe, so shut up and drive. Small Wonders Barbara Kingsolver
