The first three Dylan albums I purchased when they were the latest release were Empire Burlesque, Knocked Out Loaded & Down in the Groove. So Oh Mercy will forever be jaw-dropping to me. The first one I could love without desperate effort. (Despite revisionist history, those three are still poor.)

I honestly think it might be as simple as Paul is there on bass when he doesn’t have Punch Brothers gigs. (I have never heard a Punch Brothers song.)
