Did you know that last year there was only one magnitude 3.0 quake in Victoria, and it was the state's largest for 2025?

A magnitude 3.1 earthquake near Dargo in early Feb 2026 is the largest in the state this year, with the region's hills shaken hours later by an M2.8 about 100km to the southeast.

At 8:38am we detected a magnitude 2.8 earthquake north of Dargo in eastern Victoria, and another of similar magnitude just occurred at 5:02pm, about 110km to the southwest of this morning’s event, north of Moe/Morwell

If this is the first time you've seen one of our earthquake maps, welcome! They are routinely posted, but may not contain any notable activity. They exist to show that we are not without earthquakes in southeast Australia. This one is from 19 January to 1 February. Largest magnitude was a 2.4 in NSW

A dozen of last week's 37 earthquakes all occurred in a 22 minute window - a tiny cluster in the mountains of Errinundra National Park in far eastern Victoria The largest earthquake for the period was a magnitude 2.0 near Cadia NSW.

Here's 107 holiday break earthquakes, from 22 Dec to 11 Jan. The largest in South Australia (within the map area) was a magnitude 2.8 on Dec 29 near Parachilna. The largest in NSW was a 2.6 near Cootamundra, and Victoria's largest was 0.6 and one syllable smaller: a 2.0 and near Inverloch.

This is the last weekly map update until 2026, but stay tuned for earthquake information posts if something notable happens over the holiday break.
Last week we detected 36 earthquakes, the largest being a magnitude 2.7 located about 25km northwest of Warracknabeal in western Victoria.

Last week a magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred near the Oodnadatta Track, about 50km west of Marree, SA. This is the seventh M4+ earthquake in the map area so far this year. A magnitude 2.8 quake occurred near Lake Eildon, VIC. Activity continues off Tasmania's north coast after the M3.3 on Nov 30.

8 years ago we made our earthquake data analysis application, Waves, free to download. Prior to that it was in the hands of just a few hundred users. Since then it's been downloaded almost 25,000 times! Windows dominates, but we also have it available for macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) and Ubuntu.

The two largest earthquakes last week were a magnitude 2.3 near Broken Hill, and a 2.0 near Cadia NSW.
To those commenting that we are being dramatic by calling these "earthquakes": this is the only precise term. They just vary in energy. Tremor or shake are unofficial terms used help orient readers

In the last week we have detected 37 earthquakes in the map region, which is about average. The largest was just off the Tasmanian south coast at magnitude 2.9, followed by two near Cadia NSW (2.4 & 2.3), two in South Australia (2.3 off Seaford, 2.2 Flinders Ranges), and a 2.0 near Tynong VIC.

Here's the last two weeks of earthquakes in southeast Australia. The largest was a magnitude 2.7 near Broken Hill NSW.
If you hadn't noticed them before, the grey dots in the background of our maps show historical epicentre locations, mostly from the last 60 years, but some from as far back as 1788!

We recorded two non-earthquakes in the last 24 hours. The first was on our office seismograph, detecting Oasis fans 5.5km away at Marvel Stadium. The second was picked up by our station in eastern Victoria - likely a sonic boom from a meteor. The sound was reported widely in the region.
