I don't think people grasp the scale of user-generated data that is necessary to deliver the "feel" of a global, always-on social media platform these days.

Ii miss and reminisce about the days of "big webboards" that wouldn't even be a ripple in bsky's wake, but they were something very different

So there's a ~thing~ on the socials now, where a few extremely online evangelicals have decided Sept. 23rd is the day of the Rapture. @kristinrawls.bsky.social and I did several podcast episodes on the whole cultural phenomenon (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c... but this is an interesting point.

Impossible to know how real vs. fake, I suppose, but another very popular video on the rapture side of TikTok is a dude selling his car because he’s "not going to need it" very long—why sell it, I don’t know, because theoretically you won’t need the money either?? But there you go.

The idea is always that these compromises — to find a halfway mark to GOP hate rather than articulating an alternative and advocating for vulnerable Americans — are the “real” America rather than a squirming, mealy avoidance of engagement. It assumes fascism is the natural state of all people.
