and at that scale, automation triage is just a non-negotiable requirement. the alternative (and I'm not saying it's a BAD one!) is retiring to small relatively insulated microcommunities

I don't think people grasp the scale of user-generated data that is necessary to deliver the "feel" of a global, always-on social media platform these days.

Ii miss and reminisce about the days of "big webboards" that wouldn't even be a ripple in bsky's wake, but they were something very different

The average hellboy comic is like “hellboy meets with his old friend Professor Cornelius Bottomsworth of Oxford University to discuss an Assyrian artifact..something something something, Hellboy gets pummeled within an inch of his life by Pazuzu. Small inset panel showing two lilacs.”

It’s been real weird to watch — I was slowly deconverting from fundie religion when I first read it WAY back in the day, and the tension in his strips around the broad concept of “vices” and “virtues” back then kinda resonated. But that tension can go in a LOTTA different directions, and…

The explosive rise of big UGC platforms in the mid aughts was driven entirely by the realization that tapping pent-up self-expression energy was cheaper than paying to create and publish first-party content. Now platforms want even more, so AI it is…

Love this perspective; it’s one that is overlooked so often in pursuit of “correctness.”

Wild that he accused someone of virtue signaling by performing the literal definition of virtue signaling

not many people know this but if the play doesn’t list an end time it means the actors just have to keep acting until one of them passes out

"It's impossible to know how much this is real belief or fake play-acting" is almost, juuuuuust nearly nailing it.

What's going on is kayfabe.

So there's a ~thing~ on the socials now, where a few extremely online evangelicals have decided Sept. 23rd is the day of the Rapture. @kristinrawls.bsky.social and I did several podcast episodes on the whole cultural phenomenon (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c... but this is an interesting point.

Impossible to know how real vs. fake, I suppose, but another very popular video on the rapture side of TikTok is a dude selling his car because he’s "not going to need it" very long—why sell it, I don’t know, because theoretically you won’t need the money either?? But there you go.

Tragically, Will Stancil is actually the closest thing this age has to a moral paragon because he was exposed to people being mean to him on the internet without becoming a Trumpist out of spite, a test which seemingly every other major Discourse Generator online has failed.

The idea is always that these compromises — to find a halfway mark to GOP hate rather than articulating an alternative and advocating for vulnerable Americans — are the “real” America rather than a squirming, mealy avoidance of engagement. It assumes fascism is the natural state of all people.
eaton.fyi
Through the calculus of compromise, every individual victim of hate campaigns is a “dumb stand to take.”

Every crime is a pointless one in the face of all crime, every principle is an unnecessary one.

I’m sorry, are they just trying to play Jack Ryan in real life? Is that the jist of it?
