Like Rob Schneider suggesting there were no children's hospitals when he was a kid. Mistaking "I was unaware of it because I was a child and completely uninterested" with "it didn't exist."

It’s also one of those things conservatives don’t realize is much less dire than Trump-led state terror

Mexican flags at protests were also supposed to help Trump, but they didn’t. Not because the advice against them was entirely bad, but because what we’re facing is obviously astronomically worse

Thanks. On behalf of all of us who in favor precise rhetoric

And I appreciate that the OPSEC is, as ever, immaculate
January 16, 2026 at 12:45 AM
Well, that's the issue I was arguing that you responded to
January 15, 2026 at 9:42 PM
It is, which is why I'm not a doomer about it

I don't think midterms will be "canceled" I think he might succeed at making enough of a mess to seriously hurt us. His whole Presidency so far has been a string of failures and successes adding up to a mess that has seriously hurt us

Law be damned
January 15, 2026 at 9:35 PM
...But I CAN do that, and there's a lot of daylight between me doing that and me rotting in jail

That's all I'm saying. I'm against doomerism. I think Bouie is bringing important facts to the table

I also think it's a smug mistake to act like people don't need to steel their spines because "law"
January 15, 2026 at 9:08 PM
Until Trump says otherwise and a bunch of people go along with him because they want to

And I'm NOT saying that's the ball game, but you seem to be saying "you don't understand, there are stores where you buy shoes, you don't shoot someone and take theirs"...

The possibilities aren’t 1) the midterms happen perfectly as usual or 2) the midterms completely don’t happen at all

There’s a lot of opportunity to create chaos that results in an electoral “jump ball”

And I’m pretty sure one party will be pushing an agenda while the other is “very troubled”
January 15, 2026 at 8:22 PM
I agree but I also don’t think stopping him is as easy as Thanos-citing-the-law

And I fear citing the law as if that means it just can‘t happen is as demotivating as saying “this is fascism we already lost”
January 15, 2026 at 6:26 PM
That may be true, but a lot of us simply see that Trump is a man of will and laws aren't self-enforcing

MN is how we stop Trump, not quoting laws
January 15, 2026 at 4:48 PM
A lot of people will comply because they want to, and a lot of people will be in the street

How does it all shake out...?

I get why you ask these questions, and the doomerism on the other side sucks, but this is "laws aren't self-enforcing" territory so just quoting laws isn't any kind of flex
January 15, 2026 at 4:43 PM
Trump 100% could and would decree that

Many Republicans would (try to) stay

Schumer and Jeffries would be (very) troubled

Patriots would be out in the streets like in MN & IL

What would the outcome be? Open question. I get why Tom is more optimistic vs a year ago, but dismissiveness will kill us

”I want to watch this over and over” is, I would argue, a specific category of “great movie”

And doesn’t disqualify these other movies from being great (not that I think they’re all great)

Which isn’t to say some movies’ “greatness” is really just a fever

Further, he’s (seemingly) picking Magione as a counter-balance on the idea that he’s “the left’s” violent hero - but he was lionized on the right as well. Maybe not by the elites but by real regular Americans on the right
January 11, 2026 at 12:47 PM
Voting against would only have opened them up to easy political attacks like "they're weak on national security and terrorism"

(Which is not to say all Dems were opposed on principle but triangulating on politics)
January 8, 2026 at 8:45 PM
Recently (today?) Tom said ICE should be abolished but when another poster suggested every Dem should be saying so, Tom disagreed because it was bad politics (or at least that's my understanding)

By the same rationale, didn't Dems who voted for the PATRIOT Act practice smart politics?
January 8, 2026 at 8:43 PM
I get it but, honestly? Enough people want it and they get the edge thanks to everyone not paying attention

Plus Dems being shit at politics

The majority doesn’t want this. Which shames us even more that we let it happen
