🚨 Super excited to share my new paper in CEP on precursors of students' cost perceptions with @pnbeymer.bsky.social and @emilyqr.bsky.social! We found that weekly perceptions of belonging and reported use of SRL lowered cost perceptions the following week. Read it here for free for 50 days!

Yes, I’m sure that’s also true! I wonder if the virtual component will resurface. It’s definitely a bit of no-win situation.

I totally agree with the sentiment behind this, though I think we’d lose out on a lot of students (in particular) attending! Most people I know who are on visas (and even green cards) right now are afraid to travel internationally :/

Well, they did it - notice of a move to threaten federal funding over DEI. While not surprising, this is still so disheartening.

They claimed that it’s illegal to “treat students differently on the basis of race to achieve nebulous goals such as…social justice and equity”….😢

In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, marking the legal end to Jim Crow in the USA. Its Title VI banned discrimination by race among any institution that receives Federal funds.

On Friday, the Acting head of the Ed Dept sent out this letter to all 50 states:

Appreciate you taking the time to share this :) As a new faculty member who was looking at MSI grant opportunities, it’s hard to know where to start. But I’m with you on continuing the work however we can!

Well just received this email regarding a paper under review:
Screenshot of an email that reads: "Dear Authors,

As you may know, the new presidential administration in the United States has issued Executive Orders, including one that impacts foreign aid.

As part of these Executive Orders, USAID-funded projects have received stop work orders. Given the circumstance, we must stop all work on Global Health: Science and Practice. As such, I regret that we will have to postpone processing submitted papers. We know that a lot of work has gone into preparing your paper. Please feel free to take your manuscript elsewhere.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this challenging time.

Sincerely,

Natalie Culbertson
Managing Editor
Global Health: Science and Practice Journal"

Another funding opportunity is gone. NSF archived the the Career-Life Balance program which provided supplemental funding when researchers are on family leave.

The small strides we had made toward improving representation in science are being undone so fast.

This is the way they do it in Budapest and Moscow.
A tweet from the account "U.S. Attorney DC". The tweet includes a statement from Edward R. Martin Jr., the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. The statement is presented in a quote box and reads: "Our initial review of the evidence presented to us indicates that certain individuals and/or groups have committed acts that appear to violate the law in targeting DOGE employees" said Edward R. Martin Jr., U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. "We are in contact with FBI and other law-enforcement partners to proceed rapidly. We also have our prosecutors preparing." Below the quote, there is a section with the name "Edward R. Martin Jr." and the title "United States Attorney District of Columbia" along with the seal of the Department of Justice.

They never give up. Neither can we.

What is the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)?
➡️ 15 experts who develop vaccine recommendations for the US. (vaccinology, immunology, etc & 1 consumer rep)
➡️ Selected by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. If RFK Jr is chosen, he will appoint folks who undermine vaccines.
The shape of the U.S. with enlarged letters A-C-I-P written across the country. This odd word art style has an image in
each letter: two doctors, a mother and child, vaccine bottle, a doctor consoling a patient.

The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey has monitored the wellbeing of America’s high school students since 1991.

Since 2015, it’s been a vital source of data on LGBQ youth. In 2023, it provided the first ever nationally representative sample of transgender teens.

As of this morning, it’s gone.
