I've read a lot of commentary about this harangue, but alarming for most women is the blatant misogyny, not just a hatred of "woke" - this is the backlash of the patriarchy on full display, what journalist Ece Temelkuran calls the rise of the Radical Male.

The U.S. military has historically been an engine for cultural and social change in America. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s vision for the armed forces he leads runs counter to that.

Reading Together by @ecetemelkuran.bsky.social

I'm struck by this bit- about how even in accepting refugees people would rather see a thing to help than a whole person with a life and who might be able to help others... thread coming... I've put the transcript in the alt text
Black text on white paper, highlighted in bright pink. The bright pink highlight reads "Because as Gassama and I know very well, if you take refuge in a foreign land the most curious deprivation that comes with your new life is that nobody asks for your help anymore. It is mentally and emotionally more manageable for the natives to see the refugee or the exile as only the receiver of help.

Welcoming a refugee with basic needs is always more manageable for the hosting society than accepting the fact that they might he welcoming into their space a real person, a new life."

Absolute joy and privilege to chair a further two discussion at the Edinburgh Book Festival. The first with Ece Temelkuran, journalist and author of “How to Lose a Country” and “Together” on the rise of fascism and how we fight it. She was brilliant, unapologetic, and wise. Please read her books!
Two women standing side by side. On the left Ece Temelkuran and the right talat yaqoob.

Brilliant talk today by @ecetemelkuran.bsky.social at @lighthousebks.bsky.social

A thread! So, firstly, her editors wimped out of her prefered subtitle - How to Lose a Country should be the 7 steps from democracy to fascism, not dictatorship. I have amended my copy...
The front cover of a previous edition of Ece Temelkuran's book How to Lose a Country- the Seven Steps from Democracy to Fascism. My edition has the old title- instead of fascism, it says dictatorship. So the cover now has a piece of scrap paper with fascism in red biro, the font mimicking the block white font of the original cover (which is black with white writing). Except I can't find my sticky tape so it's held on with shiny green and red star stickers.

Reading @ecetemelkuran.bsky.social
Her 2025 preface to ‘Together’ is a manifesto for love against a heartless world.
Goodbye, heartless world
Dear Reader,
The gloves are off; the cut-throat world order no longer pretends to be pretty. The icing on the cake - the rule of law, liberal democracy, human rights and all that - is now unnecessary. All that we imagine would protect us from dark forces is melting. Fascism, after making strong footholds in the political sphere, is now threatening basic human morality. Genocide is pending, and it will be against all those with basic human decency.
The world has become heartless. Therefore, there is no point in calling rulers to shame or listing political and moral atrocities. It is a system whereby those who speak of dignity, equality and caring for fellow humans are simply an inconvenient redundancy.
Rather than dragging out the tired old ways and being crushed repeatedly, it is better to admit it. We are defeated. Despite this, dear reader, here I am - waiting for you. And you are here too. The reason for us to meet on this page is that we still believe in humanity and that we suffice to begin anew.
Enough counting the morbid symptoms; the birth of the new world is overdue. Yet, for the last push, we need to conceive of a strong new heart to deliver the future of humanity. This new heart is urgently required to gather all the protestations of the…
