"If you don’t need them, no one can make you use them, but if you panic the night before your first exam, it will be too late to get accommodated for that test, and there typically are no 'do-overs' for exams in college." “Everything from waking up, to going to class, to doing my homework was my choice, and I wasn’t really ready for that...and even if I’d known where to go for help I didn’t have the vocabulary to advocate for my needs.” - Rae Jacobson, Writer with ADHD and Learning Disabilities. Students with #LearningDisabilities #ADHD #Dyslexia #Disabilities may get a lot of advice about disclosing their disability when they apply to college. The decision they make should be their own & it should be informed by knowing what data is available (or isn’t). I explain:

Research reveals a major reason why many students who have had disability accommodations in high school don't register for them at college. Often, it's because they don't understand a key difference in the way things work at college. Find out what that difference is:

Taking time at the beginning of the week to look at what's coming up is a great strategy to aid planning skills. I recommend this to my college students . Read to learn how to start this habit for them @additudemag.bsky.social Magazine https://www.additudemag.com/weekly-family-schedule-template/

Kelley Challen has written about how schools assess students when they miss months of school & how that can present a misleading sense of their readiness for college or work after high school.

Of course, accommodations won't be very helpful if students haven't prepared for exams. See tips on effective study strategies (https://bit.ly/CollTip4) and how students might tweak the ones they like that aren't supported by research (https://bit.ly/CollTip5).

Ask your student if they've done all of these things. If not, they need to do this *now* because - again – DS doesn’t have to rush their processes due to students’ delay.
echamblet.bsky.social
If they did, they likely were reminded to *communicate personally* with professors about their approved accommodations, not just send along the notification from DS. (This is to make sure there won’t be any problems; read this to learn more: https://bit.ly/LDBlog144x)

Students continuing at the same college they attended last year should have contacted their DS coordinator to request accommodations already. (Many colleges require them to do this each term.)
echamblet.bsky.social
Plus, some colleges require students to submit forms *2 weeks* ahead for any exam where they want to use accommodations. It's not DS's job to know when students have exams & make arrangements without students' participation. And DS doesn't have to rush if student have waited to register.
