Even this definitive effort to define regions on the United States didn't dare to take a stand on Pittsburgh (the city is on a border). Pittsburgh is just in a category all its own!

This is the most accurate depiction of the Midwest to date. Wichita has always felt like the last Midwest city while also being the first plains city.

The big story here is of an agency of dedicated statisticians and public servants working tirelessly to improve economic data in a climate of budgetary cuts to data collection. They have been very innovative in meeting that mandate. But we should also just fund our economic infrastructure.

Important to remember that thanks to the dedicated public servants at BLS, employment estimates have become MORE accurate over time

And the final version of the preliminary revision reported today will probably be smaller when it is incorporated early next year

The preliminary benchmark revision of -911K amounts to -0.6% to March 2025 payroll employment. Combined with 2-month revisions, recent total revisions are big but hardly unprecedented, & smoothed over the business cycle the payroll survey has gotten more accurate over time.

Are any of my papers on your syllabus? Undergrad, PhD, econ history, or (preparing myself for crickets) a non-econ history class are all great. DMs are open and huge thanks in advance

(I guess @barbarabiasi.com is a month ahead of me on tenure packet paperwork)

Hello #econtwitter community: if any of you has been teaching any of my papers, would you mind shooting me a DM? I would hugely appreciate that 🙏 and thanks in advance!

Yes! We talk about this a lot in the updated working paper (on my website).
econhist-allday.bsky.social
Yes, the indices were revised. We collected additional data and improved the specification as part of the peer review process. So you should use the V2 version from now on. Thank you for asking.

One of the most surprising details in the latest CPI: an increasing share of price data was estimated, not observed.

In June, over 1/3 of #CPI imputations came from other items or locations likely due to budget cuts and staffing shortages at BLS.

We can’t fight #inflation without reliable data.

I am looking for a research assistant to work with me on the development of U.S. housing markets. Experience with ArcGIS, Stata useful. We build datasets that allow us to understand housing affordability, the impacts of transit and zoning, and more:

This isn't good: "BLS is reducing sample in areas across the country. In April, BLS suspended CPI data collection entirely in Lincoln, NE, and Provo, UT. In June, BLS suspended collection entirely in Buffalo, NY." #EconSky

Economic historians take note - big methodological advances in digitizing data from old, irregularly formatted tables. But they are easy to use.
chrisseveren.bsky.social
Curious how accurate multimodal LLMs are at digitizing diversely formatted historical tables?

➡️ pretty accurate!
➡️ helps a lot with harmonization
➡️ far cheaper than manual digitization
➡️ but iterative, disciplined prompt training is important!

In Dublin to meet with @ronanlyons.bsky.social and present to @cephie.bsky.social. Enjoying the sunshine, eating all the pub food, and doing research in together in person. Highly recommend getting an Irish coauthor.
