This clever, lively book traces a lineage from Rokeya Hossain’s 1924 feminist novel “Padmarag” to her 1922 Bengali translation of Marie Corelli’s critique of Victorian patriarchy in “The Murder of Delicia” — back to Dickens’s wicked divorce from his wife Catherine

Update: I was sure this was one of them, but it’s not: maybe that particular punishment was not one the judge felt comfortable invoking

This is a wild way to sign a judge’s order: those little citations are probably not at all legally relevant but I bet I know what they are

Interesting data point: our mild-mannered Dem Congressional Rep from central Illinois is promoting a concrete reform agenda that involves ending Citizens United (!! a big ask!). Not packing SCOTUS but steps towards ethics rules (enforced by whom I wonder)

“Minnesotans are insisting that their neighbors are their neighbors whether they were born in Minneapolis or Mogadishu.”

I’d welcome a theory of neighborism— as close as you can get to Wm Morris’s “fellowship,” but in an American vein & about the contingencies of acceptance in a complex society 🤝❤️‍🩹

Fashion is always a hall of mirrors to a certain extent, but maybe other forms of media will be called upon to represent it

Kids with no social media depicted on TV as being cool? Magazines that profile people who refuse the digital? ?

Fashion has already started to turn against these kids
January 16, 2026 at 4:02 PM
Gen X complaint! I was shocked when putting luxury brand names on things got cool after Y2K. Fashion isn’t real etc. but grunge was pretty easy to pull off if you didn’t have money in the 90s. Lavish spending was “gross” and for “posers”: maybe the wheel will turn again.
January 16, 2026 at 3:40 PM
This guy (I know! 😄) doesn’t see an obvious way out of the loop “seeing rich influencers on social media -> hating self & being pessimistic.”

But fashions have changed & might change again! The rich didn’t use to be “cool”: they were stuck with an uncool preppy style.

This alarm set off everyone’s phones in the coffee shop; a barista told me she knew the word “squall” from the Canadian folk song “White Squall,” about an unpredictable deadly wave on the Great Lakes that can sweep an unwary mariner to his doom

At least 25-minute long car rally against ICE organized yesterday on FB by the Champaign-Urbana Resistance Effort

They organized the theme: yellow, with streamers, driving across town & up to the Lowe’s parking lot
