🧵 Exciting news from our lab #CpgSthlm! 🥳

Thousands of years ago, mammoths roamed, and so did their fascinating microbial companions. Our latest study, published in 𝘊𝘦𝘭𝘭, brings them to light 🦣🦠🧬

Incase you missed it - our recent paper in @pnas.org on Norwegian lemming genomics!

Genetic sequencing dates the split between Siberian and Norwegian lemmings at around 35,000 years ago, shortly before the Last Glacial Maximum—making Norwegian lemmings among the planet’s youngest mammal species. In PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Huge thanks to everyone involved in the study, especially those at @cpgsthlm.bsky.social! 👏

We also identified mutations that might be associated with the Norwegian lemming's coat colour and overwintering behaviour. Finally, given the deep divergence between the Western and Eastern Siberian lemmings, we suggest that Eastern Siberian lemmings should be regarded as Lemmus paulus.

Using modern and ancient genomes, we show that the Norwegian lemming diverged very recently - only around 34 thousand years ago! Following this divergence, we didn't find any signal of gene flow between the Norwegian lemming and its closest relative, the Western Siberian lemming.
