So let's do a little more math to find out what the equivalent full price of our vehicle should be if it costs us $512 a month. Luckily, this is easy to calculate because all we need is the length of the financing term the average American uses when financing their vehicles.

So let's find out what 10% of America’s median income can afford. Using the most up-to-date Census info at www.census.gov/libra.... We know the median earnings of U.S. individuals was $61,440 last year. After dividing that by 12 ($5,120), then multiplying by .1 (for 10%),

Thanks to this article from C&D www.caranddriver.com.... We can simplify our calculations and use their expert advice to figure out that any car (excluding insurance and maintenance) that costs less than 10% of a person's monthly income can be considered within reason for a car.

We settled early on that "affordable" meant the vehicle had to be priced within reason for at least 50% of the US population. Then we had to figure out what pricing would be considered "within reason". This put us on the hunt for financial experts that could answer that question.
