Inside a Dark Space by MJ James is an own-voice sci-fi book with fantastic autism rep. I love how it portrays the space that people still hold for each other to learn about & accommodate each other, even when the world is in a much rougher place. It is hopeful amidst the bleak.

Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde, and Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. The explorations of queerness as not simply attraction, but a broader experience, born within broader marginalization, is nuanced, gorgeous, & visceral in both.

I have two. The traditional children's poet I loved the most was Shel Silverstein. His poetry books were accessible and lovely. My non traditional fav was Edward Gorey. I've always appreciated dark humor, and his The Gashlycrumb Tinies: Alphabet of Death was the best.

It wasn't a kid's book, exactly, but I was -obsessed- with ancient Egyptian history and artifacts, so my fav non-fiction book as a kid was this King Tut book 😄 My spouse apparently had it as well. Definitely a part of my obsession with worlds other than my own.

A children's book that influenced me as a reader/writer was The Well of Sacrifice by Chris Eboch. It combined complex characters, political intrigue, romance, loss, and the fall of a kingdom with rich representation of Mayan culture and society. It was my fav for a long time.

(One day Bluesky will have character limits that work with my brain, but it is not this day 😅)

The Divines is an NA contemporary fantasy romance. If you love romantic angst, magical powers, high stakes, and tough but complex FMCs, this book might be for you!
