What is Mokuhanga, and what are Ukiyo-e prints?

Both terms refer to Japanese woodblock prints: images one associates with Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, Utamaro and Hokusai, who produced beautiful prints of luminous colour around 150-200 years ago during the Japanese Edo (present-day Tokyo) period.

The course will explore making plates using different types of materials such as wallpaper, feathers, leaves, and string, sticking them down onto a piece of card which is then varnished. When ready, the ‘plate’ is then inked up and printed onto paper, creating rich textures and an embossed surface.

A collagraph is a print taken from a collaged plate. This weekend course allows ample time and opportunity to explore this deceptively simple and versatile technique.

At the core of the exhibition lies the story of Arif’s own arrival in the UK from Pakistan as an asylum seeker. Her family was initially placed in a high-rise council flat in Prospecthill Circus, on Glasgow’s Southside, by the Home Office.

The unknown catalyst of this glee allows the viewer to place themselves within the image, inserting their own lived experiences into the piece and reminding them to find joy in both the mundane and the extraordinary, as the various eclectic imagery in the surrounding red square suggests.

The spirit of jubilance glows from every line and dot of Alastair Mack's Whole. The figure, obscure save for an uncoiling vermillion heart, throws their arms wide in merriment. The bright colours surrounding the figure inject an otherwise dull individual with a sense of liveliness and joie de vivre.
